Sitting through ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ as a biographic takes on an absolutely unimpressive storyline along with proving zero creativity aimed at the watching audience which comes anywhere close to what can be considered a scorching pain. As a result, a more suitable phrase to define my experience with his work is Why Bother? and in the case of this film, the phrase is most appropriate. For the rest of his work, what one experiences is an overly aggressive push to sell the physical aspect of discography through marketing new graphics on the covers. If we ignore all of the previously stated issues, this film does its best to show how incompetent and disorganized Cheryl Ducat truly is, as the very editing of the film aims at exposing and showcasing contempt towards Marley. For as weak of an introduction the artist is normally given under the cover of courtesy, due to how bad these films are they at least feel mildly tactful. His reputation is now intertwined with an assortment of flaws that are present within the jukebox record.
When looking at the direction in which Reinaldo Marcus Green seems to be heading, it’s fair to also assess his debut movie “Monsters and Men” as a promise kept although this was not the case with his icy weak derivative of the film ‘Joe Bell’. He did miss the mark when it came to that film seeing as he was only brought on board once the concept was almost finalized. However, it is unfortunate as I had expectations for him given his previous track record as one of the directors of King Richard Fear Which Is where Will Smith stewarded the film’s cinematic endeavors to win a well-earned Oscar.
Green, once again, indulges in a rather baseless ideology, suffering through a violent form, that greatly impacted him the last time around. One Love released on the 26th of May in 2021 saw the release of Faizon Love in the studios under the guidance of Marissa. Green might be the face of this complete meltdown but in all pessimism, he isn’t the one at fault alone. Patently stating, Green, Terence Winter, Frank E Flowers, and Zach Baynlin initiated and compiled the rough template of this film during its dollar inception phase and presented it as guidance, only to have it evolve to more of an aimless illustration accompanied by distorted historical events.
So these few words depict a chain of three musical events occurring between mid-1976 to mid-1978, Marley, during this period, has established himself as a powerful political figure trying to host a concert addressing the fight between two political candidates. Marley had a few children with Rita, a person he married, as well as a few other children with different women alongside other relatives who were shown to be fathered by him. The movie paints the picture of a tight-knit family living together. However, it also presents an interesting backstory of Bob Marley always being at risk due to security risks the family he has showcases having everything g surrounded by high walls and armed guards.
Sadly, the show appears to have slow pacing in that it seems the creative directors are aiming to decrease the duration of quietness to around ten minutes, meaning there has to be constant music catering, personally, I feel that’s why they are missing out on it. The fan base clearly lacks the comprehension of the life that Marley lived as a singer in his political engagement, as they also do not comprehend the essence of Wani Angela, his first wife, and later on that yelling Donald and Rita who had some free time lying before some pathetic actor Michael ward gets them shot and the nausea-inducing team has to run out of the place, why she was. Bob Marley’s love for the Wailers is nothing short of pure and unadulterated beauty and is further accentuated by Robert Elswit’s impressive cinematography.
In the mundane footage of the studio, the viewers can see that the focus will be on Marley’s album work, specifically the disc Exodus. There are quick shorthands of the title song of the album and of hit ‘Jammin’. These scenes are set within the orthodox framework of shooting a score where the main idea is actually crafted in a matter of seconds. As Marley enters the room, the Wailers are watching a video song of the disque ‘Exodus’. He then suggests that the song will be featured as the cover for the album. Do imagine the consequences as am writing, they are already looking forward to a trip to Europe.
But then, If there is a sense of irritation, any sense when watching the music biopic regarding when composers expect the song ‘One Love ‘ to feature in and whether this song has anything to do with Marley’s politics and Caroline Marley never goes to her Rastafarian worship or reggae for that matter. So instead Green sins everyone, by making terrible use of wigs, pin-up lines worn out against dirty backdrops to motivational songs, only to be cosmologically aided by dumb coughs and sneezes.
In the film, there is no actor of any worth, for example, Ben-Adir Yes, let’s give credit to this. For instance, towards the close when Marley’s children are seated around their father in a wooden house, he is playing the guitar, singing songs that they find exciting like, “Redemption Songs” while they watch the flames. Well, taking practical points into consideration, right from the start of the scene to the finish, he makes an effort to portray the icon but during the live show, he is nowhere close to the instinctive nature of performing, rather he looks like a robot doing mechanical choreography.
I would venture to say that Ben-Adir seeks to cut corners when it comes to his performance. This attitude is, it seems, not doing him any good. Dull. Lynch of Appeal, The Captivating Lynch Gets some sloth in his veins, emotionalized. “Sometimes the messenger becomes the message”, she tries to reason with Marley, quite obviously an attempt since inanimate objects such as her dialogue have lost their mark and are bigger, but an attempt to the role that is quite convincingly enlivening. Rita, in the case of Marley, is usually portrayed as an appendage, who comes into the picture once in a while to voice out in clear terms the concept of marriage hidden behind the scenes of the movie or to discuss the marriage which is not shown in the movie. There is no part of it that shows what motivated Marley and Rita to be so attracted to each other and why they seemed to be so powerful with Marley occupying the numerous affairs.
In the introduction session before the movie started, Ziggy Marley’s message was played. He gave a disclaimer by explaining that the movie would go entirely according to his condemnation. As for whether I expect that to happen, this presupposes thinking in terms of amae language. Such a claim presupposes a one and absolute reality which is what the word actually means. In a movie that I would not be fascinated in, where the portrayal of the more truthful character of an individual is almost chaotic. “One Love”, that piece of music does not carry the rhythm or spark or even life essence utilized to accompany the music of Marley.
