It is almost poetic that Steven Van Zandt, aka Little Steven or Miami Steve, was able to work with two rather iconic figures within pop culture, that is Bruce Springsteen and Tony Soprano. They were great men, exceptional cavalcade figures who couldn’t go unheeded in the sphere of pop culture.

All of this is integrated within the engaging, informative, and star-laden HBO documentary that is Going to be released on Saturday called “Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple”. He reminisces about his association with other celebrities like Stevie Van Zandt and the Asbury Jukes or his ex-wife from The Bronx he married many years ago. Stevie went from working on more personal projects to Sirius/XM channels and finally to finally political work within two of the eminent overlapping spheres. This is good considering the two-hour and twenty-five-minute runtime that the documentary has. Van Zandt is too interesting of a character to focus on for only 60 minutes.

“Disciple” is also infused with a great safe dose of archival video footage and photos alongside interviews done with Bill Teck. Teck approached Paul McCartney, Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, Southside Johnny, and Jackson Browne for the movie which includes bizarre gory looks into the past of the industry. The New Jersey concerts where Springsteen and Van Zandt used to come down in separate music groups were drenched with cameras eliminating the feeling of being a private event. Van Zandt recalls meeting Bruce at a New Jersey club in Middletown while Bruce says that ‘Dude wore a huge paisley tie’ that ‘immediately made him his rock as a brother.’

While elaborating on how important they are, Van Zandt is dressed in his trademark scarf and flashes pirate clothing and while being adoringly flippant to himself is of the opinion ‘once I linked up with Springsteen, I suspected that it was more than a fair share’ all the while holding a saxophone. “In the 80s, it all started to change and I left the band because they were about to burst, but it was the worst opportunity cost of my life because I had all the pieces after so many years and they finally came together.”

Cutting tracks like the anti-apartheid campaign that urged him to compose his 1985 protest song, Sun City, gives a glimpse of the life of Television sensation Maureen Van Zandt, who played the role of Gabriella in the Soap opera The Sopranos that ran for several years in the US.Cυ, as well as the marriage to Father Little Richard who wed her, piece together as crucial points in understanding the reality of Van Zands career initiation.
