Música (2024)

In the romantic comedy “Música,” a young man named Rudy is depicted as someone who looks at the world with cynicism and is in relief of the happenings going on all around. To him, meaningless noises that surround him on a daily basis turn into what can best be described as a resonating song that consists of bass that makes him focus less on heading for classes or paying attention to his girlfriend, Haley (Francesca Reale). For some time, he listens little to the words of Bruno or Eva, who seem to suffer from his refusal to marry one of the girls from the Brazilian community in Newark, New Jersey. Upset with this condition, he goes to a fish market and there encounters a Brazilian American named Isabella (Camila Mendes). Just like that Rudy’s world is filled with a different type of sweeter sounds.

“Música” depicts an intriguing tale of romance, rhythmic touches, and the essence of Brazilian culture as seen right from the colorful poster that reflects Brazil’s flag colors of green, yellow, and white Rudi, a character who is based on the screenplay he wrote and Directed Rudi Mancuso, explains how he has synesthesia, which is a condition where a single stimulus triggers a second reflex from one or more of the sense organs for example seeing a taste. This describes his case very well, simple and unremarkable everyday sounds of city traffic, an airplane, kids playing in some park, chatting people, and everyday life’s noise are so much to intrude on his thoughts and in this context, it is concomitant with musical performances that feature incorporating everyday items as instruments for the off-broadway production “Stomp.” It is a bit of a variation of ‘All That Jazz’ in the sense that, Mancuso also integrates talking, singing, and dancing in his search for words describing his relations with others and the demands society’s society imposes on him. The music of ‘Música’ was written by Mancuso who has backed his artistic intent in the motion picture with puppetry, animation, and futuristic production design.

It’s clear that certain tunes and some actions do not always fit the best of the best, for example, the busker’s performances in the train station. In the romantic genres, such as boy meets girl and eventually parts ways while hoping the blanket gets some wedding pictures, are captured in a romantic scene. However, Rudy runs in circles and attempts to please three women by navigating them through various scenes, which one does not normally expect in a romantic comedy.

Even though there are still minor details and errors that are not completed, there is still much to grab in the directorial debut of Mancuso. In addition to the film’s main plot, which tells a love story, Mancuso, who co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Lagana, also claims that this movie is part of his and his Brazilian background.

On multiple occasions, it was indeed within the realm of likelihood that he would go from English to Portuguese without any issues at all; even on a date, he does fit some of his mother’s feijoada; the influence of bossa nova and samba on the music and choreography in the movie is difficult to miss, and in one funny scene in a restaurant, he gets to drink several shots of cachaça, probably much more than in any American film.

Mancuso also delves into some facets that are a little messy such as the stance that his mother, Maria (Mancuso’s biological mother) holds, that he must keep looking for a wife among other Brazilian women. He is also left with the usual assumptions of his parents-in-law law-apparently since they have a maid from Central America, the man must speak Spanish and if he should take the responsibility of telling them the truth or just ignoring it for peace’s sake. Indeed, not a few second and third-generation offspring of migration will be able to see something close to them while watching Mancuso’s movie but on the other hand, it is also rather unusual because the viewpoint of the Brazilian Americans is rarely seen on screen.

Mincuso’s relationship with his mother, who also plays a prominent role in the film, is a nice addition to the entire feeling of celebration. The parents have a husband and wife who is more entertaining than the quests Rudy has with Isabella, who remains, in our fantasies, only an ideal, and in reality, his girlfriend, Haley, who nowadays has a different set of goals and plans than those of this protag About this marriage intention, he often is about thinking how his post-marriage life will look like once he leaves his mother place. He indeed may be so much close to his mother who tends to sabotage and criticize his artistic attempts especially when it comes to women he’s courting, a narrative that might sound too real to much of us. There is a lot of laughter in the ending, as usual, as the film-makers, together with the cast and the attendants look back to Mincuso’s childhood photographs while the credits for the film are being aired, and it is obvious that fazer música is no less than in honor of her at least than any music and culture that inspires him. Up till the final frame, “Música” remained bound to that banal ending that you expect from a romance comedy.

This explores love which isn’t easy to get for a disabled individual, this explores music too which is not in the obvious places, but more so this captures the essence of culture and heritage.
