The Present (2024)

Imagine a gadget that has the power to erase the present. In this gadget, all you have to do is go back in time to change the situation. So, you were not prepared for a test and you wish you could go back and take it again or you wish you could restart that dreadful date you had. Not a problem, in short.

Sadly, it has to be said that first, not so many of us have the opportunity to really alter the present if we happen to combine two crucial aspects of the events. One, for instance, is a reality that a majority of us cannot afford to have a single one of the past events be responsible for the dispensation of the present conditions. If you don’t agree with this, please offer a comment with a reason therefor. However, if we do this in the context of movies, well that is a different scenario. The other reality is that it makes no difference what is possible or not, there is Time travel!

Absolutely, the newly acquired grandfather clock is the most essential thing, and for some inexplicable reason the family heirloom graciously accepts this, the hands can go backward. The youngest child of the family, Taylor, gets time reversed.

He is the one person who knows about the clock and its unusual power. He is stuck in a time loop and tries to keep his parents from doing things that will make them ‘JErks’ In the situation, for example when he helps his mom not to get too close with, her work male friend.

In the second part of the movie, Taylor tells his siblings how the clock works so that they can all work together to prevent their parents from going through a painful divorce.

At what point does a family-friendly film cease to be suitable for the entire family?

The Present is a child-centered movie that aims to sensitize children about the dire consequences of disintegrating a family and advocates for family preservation. However, I suspect many of us have seen this story in older Disney and Nickelodeon programming with the added detail that Taylor, one of the boys, cannot speak and does not enjoy physical contact. He probably has some disorder that is related to autism, but the film conveniently chooses not to delve too deeply into his behavioral issues.

Taylor seems to be the perfect child in the film but throughout the movie, several inappropriate instances are visible for children under 6. For example, one young boy’s mother is shown in one of the scenes staring at a man’s chest while hitting a child. Another adult character in the movie, Emma, is shown on screen kissing her school friend, who goes on to say, “he is funding her for a sort of activity” while revealing a plastic wrapper of a group of pills to her. However, parents with children older than 12 would not have trouble watching the film, so it would not greatly concern young adolescent children’s parents.

The Present is classified as a weighty action movie, but families may find the film unsuitable for their children owing to its present sexual undertones. There exists a particular scene in one of the movies where one of the parents is attempted towards a possibly interested individual. It was something along the lines of trust issues. If the only problem was that this was branded as a rom-com, this would not be an issue for me but given that it’s a kid’s movie, I was astonished to learn that the writer devoted so much of the movie time to some of these scenes.

In an extreme case scenario where I do have this luck that I did indeed get this opportunity, I would urge the people behind this film through an email to watch themselves as the copyright council may not be kind to them. Ordinarily, I could perhaps make an executive decision as to having these people discontinue the effort right before they go about making the add-on which in and of itself had no creativity or figurative reason to begin with.

A few of my recommendations for such directors or producers include: If they would like to work with such an audience they should be advised against creating certain materials that children shouldn’t see. And in the case of Greg Kinnear and Isla Fisher, I would have liked to advise both of them against signing a contract they should not be bound to.

These are the steps I would undertake and once more I would go back to the movie. If I were to find the same errors, I would go back in time and delete the movie from the Netflix database.

That being put, the film is not all that horrible. The film does have its drama, with the family relationship being quite okay, and so does the psychological script which is not over soft and tearful as expected. But in general, this film is quite long, and it’s quite disorientating that the huge cast of actors has so much pathetic dialogues to speak, and drama to perform for what seemed like naive children who were likely to be experiencing their parent’s divorce.

If ‘The Present’ doesn’t pay attention to minute details of realism and rather chooses to show a perfect world, ‘Time can not be turned back, both our mistakes and other people’s mistakes. But life provides a lot of opportunities to move forward, using the memories of then to create a better future,’ would fit a younger audience better. This would have been much more believable and appropriate for the ending of The Present than an absurd conclusion that simply served to end the plot.

I feel like I would probably hurt a few feelings of some people, but the truth is The Present is not a movie worth the time. It is like any other, with a few changes, and is a copy of other movies. It’s watchable if you don’t think about it afterward. But, if you are like me, then you would hate the movie because it has no regard for the audience and is absolutely a waste of time.
