Mars (2024)

Mars, the animated movie that the Whitest Kids U’ Know began working on 10 years ago, was recently released in 2024. Not to mistake the movie for being easily digestible as the likes of Shell Oil’s entire board along with the Trump administration have an utter distaste for it. It is safe to say that the masses toasted themselves with the idea of rooting against the film from the very beginning.

Kyle, a character within the film’s context is a classic American story, he’s young on the cusp of marrying his long-time girlfriend, and eager to be a dentist working at his father-in-law’s clinic. An elevator, although too bland for his tastes as he’s to be only an associate in no time and taking ownership of the place. The dad looks promising about owning a car dealership given the hotel is close. However, all these things seem way too far from real as life gets overwhelmed with monotony. Kyle wishes to get married and prays for everything petty to go away which cannot happen.

At the same time, let’s say crazy billionaire Elron Branson has also announced a contest where volunteers who would want to join him on a flight to Mars will be the first in the history of mankind. All that is required to do is make a video with the answer to the question ‘Why do I want to be a member of that mission?’ After a wild party with his best man, he gets up with an urge to submit a video for Branson’s contest. Days pass, weeks pass, months pass and yes, the time for Branson’s lottery also passes. Weeks pass, and there is no lucky Kyle in Branson’s lottery; he quite haphazardly reconciles to the date of his marriage.

Also during Kyle’s marriage one of the winners of the flights got injured a month ago and there was an emergency election to decide who would go on the flight instead and during the random draw his name was picked. During one of the marriages, one of the winners of the fights gets injured. So I supposed to imagine that during the speech a new beginning that was supposed to be a speech turns out to be a new ending and marriage is exposed with a new beginning to Branson’s lottery. Unable to decide he does not stay back at the wedding nor take the bride to Mars, What was supposed to be a new beginning for Kyle’s war comes as an ending with the sequence of events unraveling. Presumably during an odd meeting, Kyle wins the prize.

So, that is the ‘glow in the dark’ version of the friendship story. But it becomes very evident from the very first five minutes of the footage as well why The Whitest Kids U’ Know would want to have animated this tale. At those places, their productivity is unlimited, and the content too, where the characters pop up while having and abusing drugs, depicting outright violence and eroticism. If the third act on its own doesn’t have the MPAA weep with all its might, the rest of it surely will. There are also certain explanations that are given just for the sake of dismissal as so-called offensive. But even they can do nothing to stop the group’s vicious vitriol against the super super-class.

Only a year ago, all were fixated on the floating boat that took off and went underwater trying to retrieve the Titanic wreckage but never returned. And now and again, a new star strides into the picture and travels to a universal ovation by flying to space with Virgin Galactica. The fact of the matter is that there are very many influential figures in the world who seek to test the limits of normal human existence without any regard for morality.

Whichever the case may be, that concern is self-evident through Kyle’s journey regardless of how brutal the message can be. Naturally, Branson has no qualms with shelling out on a ride to Mars. At the same time, as in life itself, it does not measure up to being a human being, or at least placing one to being a human being. On the other extreme, it is Kyle who asserts that to be able to cross any of those great spaces from being a human is an artist such as him who knows the essence of love and why he cares for nagging about sadness in the first seconds.

It comes to science fiction that could afford to thrive on social commentary so perhaps criticism in terms of the film’s ideas is that it has the focus of science fiction when it ought not to. As there is a low concentration of action in the film, this perhaps is the one thing that is subject to criticism. Formal collaborations have now come to an end, and the post office is still relatively reasonable.

The film is approved for children 12 years and older by the Martins because it includes a lead character voiced by John C. Reilly who assaults with some racist remarks and possesses mildly suggestive themes. Mars is one fun space-based animated movie. Even the critics have had a good laugh about it, although the animation may not be the best, I believe it is still worth the watch, and since this is the troupe’s final film, it is appropriate to think of it as their sendoff. Looks like the film will be released soon, so be on the lookout for it as it will be majorly competing for Best Film at the Tribeca Festival in 2024!
