Haunted by Her Name (2024)

There has been a recent trend for independent films to focus on slow-burn thrillers, and Haunted by Her Name stands out as an exemplary submission to this sub-genre, Jaron Olivo Lanier and Olivia Lanier are the directors behind the movie. The directors took a different spin on this movie as they blended numerous genres into one. The movie in itself is a psychological horror, slice of life, and outdoor drama all interwoven into one cohesive plot. With the movie being entirely character-focused, one could assume that the cinematography would be mediocre, but unlike popular belief, the cinematography along with the music of the film was brilliant and served perfectly with the atmosphere, and all the loose threads of the plot were tied beautifully by the end. I believe the ending of the film ruins the entire experience as the rest of the movie was remarkable in its approach, which in turn lowers the credibility of the film as a whole in my opinion.

Jaron Comes Back From An Impacted Death.

The documentary revolves around a couple of different happenings, all centered on Karen Taku, whose efforts in investigating her mother’s death are what attracted me to this movie as well. In my opinion, the movie could have been named “Haunted by Her Name” this phrase literally defines the film entirely, because Karen’s mother did take her own life in the film in order to escape her father, who was abusive. All this happens in the first act itself as a voiceover serves as a note to the viewers that “I’m going underwater” followed by Karen diving into the water, she never returns. In the movie, Karen is seen as a person working on the death of her mother and that serves as a focal point of the movie for the viewers as everything comes into perspective after this, which explains my earlier point as to why the film was aptly titled. The abuse committed was horrifying and needless to say there is no noble side to the abuse, it’s disgusting and grotesque.

Karen and Jaron were almost seen together across the whole episode, with Karen accompanying him to different places and with him at times being more affectionate towards his ex-Jaron. The cameras managed to catch Jaron swapping romantic wise words with his baby Beachil while getting prepped up for the at life and it was during one of his visits that he blasted his ex. Most of the narrations were able to provide insights into messages or emotions that are predominantly aimed at mothers since Karen herself was a woman who’s religious, has been abused, and navigated through different tragic experiences.

Jaron is still deeply affected by the nightly camping van trips, wherein she remains in contact with him, despite her already being out of the relationship. Nonetheless, it is plausible that Bridget, His Ex in this case, does not have to stress too much regarding Jaron’s elaborate emotional turmoil. Jaron tends to have unsettling dreams in the nighttime about his Ex that jars him awake feeling too much activity going on which exists outside the quiet, still van. It becomes a perfect storm of emotional disturbance when he begins to receive messages and is flooded with thoughts of Bridget, which feels immersive in nostalgia to him.

So, such given circumstances are fairly dramatic when combined and it becomes worse due to the fact there is no one around him for support, removing a strong factor to address the conflicts in his life, making everything just worse than standing alone to his thoughts.

Judah And Jaron To Build A Connection

Judah is currently trying to fix a broken van and is waiting for someone to reach out to.

So waiting in the subway, hoping they would come to assist him, forces Judah to a complex rather than a mild position, and this almost extreme place is perfectly summarised by the fact that someone assists him just after he was trying too hard to be angry and calm at the same time while feeling irritated by the feeling of being stuck.

When Jaron asked Judah for the number of a towing or a car repair service, he asked Jaron to follow him to a camping site and promised to get the means for the essentials the next day. Regarding the tow hitch, Judah rescues Jaron’s van and takes it to the camping site. Judah turns out to be a guitar player as well, and he is traveling to Seattle for an upcoming show at a local club. For a while, Jaron manages to maintain his composure and keep a reasonable distance from the overly excitable Judah. Additionally, since Jaron does not talk much, the only things both of them verbalized were a few niceties. While Jaron is apathetic when Bridget’s presence is not around during the day, however at that time he does want to hang out with Judah. Jaron is aware that normal dependability problems are not a problem and he is sure he can get them fixed in a video screenshot they have already talked about, but only the people he has worked with will be able to do so. He also goes on to explain how costly simple dependability issues could be if one were to go to a real garage.

In all this Jaron is hearing Judah’s preamble over a performance and getting in touch with him and enabling the performance with Judah.

As night begins to fall, it is evident that these two are growing great partners as they narrate to each other their life experiences around a campfire and quite a few of them hear Judah sharing his backstory and some events that really bothered him.

It is still early for Jared to learn that, much like him, Jaron celebrates their year day only a day apart. He recounts the traumatic events of his childhood: his father’s sexual abuse, the early death of his mother, and other experiences that have contributed to his childlike worldview. Jaron is quick to bring up the disturbing events of his life and the more recent events that are turbulent. Judah’s suggestion that Jaron try to accept things and now make more of a conscious effort to implicitly forget Bridget who Jaron is disturbed by is also soothing in its own right. But it is remarkable that Jadon’s advice also helps to some extent as for the first time Jaron sleeps well at night. The following day, Jadon received a surprising report from Judah stating that the mechanic had already repaired his van. After that, Judah says that he wants to leave after Jaro pays him for the repair. Before he departs to Seattle, Judah takes a small bite from a cake and smokes some cigarettes.

He mentions hoping that Jared will visit him in Seattle.

As Judah departed, Jaron chose to stay and enjoy some time at the camp area, nearly instantly bonding affectionately with his Muslim partner. Even after passing a wonderfully great night, he still managed to shake off the haunting dreams or instances that were a product of his psychological ailment. Instead of heading home, Jaron turns left towards Seattle to his surprise where Jude had already arrived who was eager to see him.

Is Jeron Struggling to Find Inner Peace?

Jaron has found harmony in himself as he has not only witnessed the beautiful textures of the movie but also elements that are further personal to him. Jaron is capable of relating to the narrative and the individuals that are showcased portraying an amiable yet eerie relationship in the film. That which has scars and petrifies most individuals such relations seem to linger voiceless over Jaron. Jude is scorned and insulted by Jaron when Jeron exposes him to a real loving family and city in which he portrays his character.

Judah quickly runs behind the van and within seconds, the whole context becomes clear as Judah pulls out a secured Jaron at the location where Bridget was last spotted. Considering what transpired previously, everything in this scene, Jaron was why Bridget was supposed to take J before her anger ended their relationship in a sad tone.

After Bridget died, which was claimed to be the doing of Jaco, Jaco decided to sabotage Jaron with the help of Bridget’s twin, who, unlike Jaco, was upset with Bridget for going out with Jaron. but Jaron turned out to be a coward and ghosted her entirely when she was required to reconcile with Judah. She had been in a relationship with Jaron for a certain period of time all the while while Bridget initiated relationships with her ex-husband Judah. After enduring this treachery by Judah, which she had hoped to achieve through autolysis, Bridget entered into a relationship with Jaron. Jaco, who is still obsessed with the idea of getting back at Jaron, is shot through the chest by Bridget’s sibling. She assumes Jaron is the root of all this heartbreak. Instead of giving her the desired final opportunity to get back at Jaron, in a dramatic turn of events after the border is crossed, Jaco stabs her severely in the heart. All this time he had been secretly hoping that over time he would win Jaron over while melting the ice that came in between them which prevented him from getting his sweet revenge.

So it’s unclear whether or not she’s even a living woman or merely has been conceived by Jaron’s imagination while together with the brat, who appears to be warmly moaning unbearably loud tenderly, Jaron rides off into the sunset with her. Jaron takes over Jude’s camper, which still belongs to mute and unconscious Bridget, following the left-behind corpse of JP and two Brady twins at the waterfront.

It is unfortunate that the conclusion of the narrative is rather convoluted as the rest of the movie is executed exceptionally well.
