Good One (2024)

It is the most powerful of the emotions that accompany an event, apart from the words uttered to denote that event, which is found in the ambiance d around that word or group of words. To put it in more general terms, let’s begin with the simpler forms which we all know quite well, but which is not the case in the movies this is quite the thing, especially in the case of the internal structure of a character’s internal world echo which is whenever a character and the audience sees an altered reality for a brief instant, it is meant to suggest that there is an echo of the reality embedded within the character, that there is a perfect coin that they will be pitched into the altered reality during that instant, and once they see it, it is already changed completely.

The overwhelming image that strikes the mind with a thought is what is supposed to be captured by the film still camera but even so, a number of films lose their reliance on this with an image with joyous radiance and subsequently drench themselves in a plethora of words that at best can be qualified as exposition. A good one is one of the few pieces we have managed to see from India Donaldson. As it turns out, cinema, as is the case with many other art forms, possesses many other attributes that are most probably absent in the majority of other works and that is the ability to believe. This is quite important for the author and for those performing the role. In “Good One”, Penn, Holly, and three LeGros even thinner actors James McCarthy and Danny Collias all of them akimbo thin and they trust each other, it’s an inner voice they focus on.

It’s important to note introductions because Chris (Le Gros) and Matt (McCarthy) have been friends for a long and have an idea of how the life of a married couple feels like. He is usually the most dependable of the group but with the divorce from his partner, he is going through an unwanted rough patch of a midlife crisis. Concerns for me is, that this industry of acting has not been kind to Matt either, he is just out there waiting to die. His teenage son refuses to talk or even meet him. Another one of Christopher’s children Samantha Collias, 17 years, is very determined and looking optimistic and enthusiastic to join a college after completing her high school education. Frankly speaking, she is a very nice and reasonable young girl. Instead, on Saturday, she would be looking forward to supporting her father, Matt, and his son on a hiking excursion in the Catskills. Since Sam wanted to hang out with Matt’s younger son, she decided to let the rest arrive first so they could go out together. Most people are anyway too late to refuse.

This does not mean that the hike is a pleasant stroll in the park on a Sunday afternoon. This goes on for three days, each one of them within a certain time frame. Everyone involved in this event carries something on their backs for hours and stands in long lines in what can be at times hostile still. Chris and Sam are highly experienced hikers. They have all the practices in place. But Matt, on the other hand, that’s the only reason he is entertaining, to begin with. First off, he is dressed like a wannabe hobo. He has a packing of the wrong types. He barely knows anything about building a tent. Tents Chris is like a stone and san hatu akira. There is an atmosphere of comradeship which I can only describe as an ordinary thing. Matt wastes Chris’s life by pouring it into frustrations and all the masti lies within Chris. It is like he is so stressed out or so uninterested that all that’s appropriate to this dire situation are the ‘jokes’. He muses, “I don’t know How I came to be so out of touch in the first place, what amazes me is how I am surprised.”

All that has been brought forward is from Sam’s perspective. She is definitely a mother I and II and definitely an intelligent one. There has been an interview in which one of the two men casts her as a mother and tells her to smoke for the adult smokes that they seem to be bewildered by. But something seems off in all this. Yes, Sam is seventeen years of age, yes, but she remains a minor. For all the torment they subject her to, one of them turns out to be her father. She is the terribly misguided lady who believes it appropriate for a child of her young age to see her being drunk and hear her father and his friend show off for infidelity against their wives. What appears to be a nice way to relax after a stressful day especially when most of it comprises arguing and yelling at people does not quite work out the way one would want it to.

There is a story supporting the idea that the more time people spend watching the movie, the more they realize that the woman, Sam, is seen with two men who make her life difficult; and those men are part of her life.

And what is also intriguing is the fact that there is simply no effort whatsoever by the ‘Good One‘ to explain anything. The sheer barbarity of the film and different heart-wrenching perspectives twist the mind. Chris goes off to prepare Sam for normalcy with the hopes that she will take them seriously, a ‘World’ encapsulated for her during that time. This is an interesting era. It’s a cool detail as Chris has said otherwise, and does reiterate the purpose of the film, including pulling aside touches after all, she is distancing. Now, the women in the video are still depicted as remaining in the kitchen. It All seems so futile.

The only remark I received from the press screening, which was of any encouragement was that of my friend and I thought it important to hold a talk after we returned home about the movie. Well, yes, there was a great deal to discuss, and I can’t deny that it is because of how everything goes around, indeed! Why is it what it is and is mute at every meeting? In this instance though, Donaldson is determined to take a path that is not often taken

Cameron tries to maintain focus and move the shells of the body around him as he begins shooting at a dugout where some bodies begin to appear in action. Director Wilson Cameron does it differently as he combines the more active parts of the canvas especially the rims of the frame where the edges boast of greater intricacy and volume of elements. What I find annoying is almost always in the front of the picture a comedic pain or a pain of anticipation, or AS Collias has really only as it is expected that she is a great actor, and this change in definition, it is easy to say captures the emotions of audience beautifully. There is something that is particular and actively in focus and is concealed under the soothing outside appearance, and for the time being the ‘passive’ inner perception does not matter.

When she comes out of the woods, she has clearly transformed. There is almost no doubt that her outer or inner countenance has undergone a drastic change. It represents a shocking impression at the very core sustaining her essence. And that is what remains with her all along. Always she is a puzzle.
