Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation (2024)

Big City Greens: Spacecation was the first full length film of the Big City Greens franchise which was launched in the last October and can now be streamed on now Disney. The franchise revolves around a family called the Greens, which the audience will get a closer look at later on. For now, it can be said that the animated series has reached its fourth season and the fifth season has also been confirmed. The storylines for The Greens, as you may have already guessed, are set within New York, specifically the 1 to 6 square districts. The producers of the movie include its series creators Chris Houghton, Shane Houghton, Michigan Coughlin and Anna O’Brian, who was the director of the film. The Houghton brothers have indeed included a couple of fragments of the series and, due to the sheer range of the universe’s scope, constructed even more elaborate ones.

The narrative starts somewhat simply but the Greens are only getting ready for their big family trip. All of them appear to be thrilled however, it seems rather difficult for Cricket’s (Chris Houghton) excitement to be high during the family road trip once their father Bill (Bob Joles) decides it is time for them to follow the exact itinerary of the family road trip carried out in the previous year, which was a round road trip to all the major sight locations. That plan is acceptable for Gramma Alice (Artemis Pebdani) and sister Tilly (Marieve Herington), but for Cricket, it’s about those same places again, and again, and again. When they were delivering some of their vegetables to the Big Tech Manufacturing Company, they came across President Gwendolyn Zapp (Cheri Oteri)’s plans of building robots, asteroid gold mining, and space hotel building. This is one new vacation destination that only Cricket wishes for, for he does feel that something like that would have unrealistic costs. But, to add the final pinch of salt to the injury, he has a wealthy friend Remy (Zeno Robinson), who has traveled with his parents to that object, the space hotel.

Cricket convinces Zapp to let him and his family work the fields, arguing that there isn’t enough programming for the farm-bots. Additionally, he asks to stay in the outer space hotel. He goes ahead and tells everyone that they are just doing a simulation and are not really on a space mission, which is a lie, but they do reveal the reality later, and this causes problems between him and his other family members. He has other important family members like his space team with him such as Commander Voyd (Renée Elise Goldsberry) who also accompanies them and is very close with the team, restricting everyone from enjoying themselves on the mission. Cricket still finds a way to cuff her and keep her frozen so she can’t talk while he has some fun.

He reconciles with his Gramma and gives her a robotic leg that he retrieved from the spaceship after her previous leg turned to ashes during her blast off; this leg has several implants that will be very helpful in the story afterward. Wouldn’t you know it?

Tilly gets another recording device which will allow her to keep what she calls important memories that she hopes to create this holiday. She also gets a lab creation that is rather birthed in chaos, Cookie, a thinking goo that can demolish Muller merely by applying pressure on it.

It seems like everything is alright with Bill and Cricket again, even though Bill has the unenviable task of navigating a spaceship through an asteroid belt inhabited by R2Ach trash, or more accurately, R2D2 Ach when it comes to Big Tech’s dire spending practices outsource the refuse to outer space. Exciting After these events, the family lands on an asteroid that is under attack from lunatic agricultural robots that were meant to ‘damage’ the object instead of ‘cultivate’ them. Although such a programming blunder, for example, is probably not that infrequently, the essence of the error becomes absolutely comic and at the same time very scary when you watch how all these characters try to escape from that situation. The Greens managed to unplug the robots, but this action inadvertently changed the trajectory of the asteroid that was supposed to remain on course. It then directs its aim towards the earth and propels itself in that direction with great force. Just in case this was not entertaining enough, there is one embarrassing scene where Cricket and Bill engage in a verbal free-for-all. Cricket’s ‘brilliant ideas’ have gotten them into trouble, which has annoyed Bill, and now he is getting a hat full of ideas from Cricket. Including the one that they are in now.

For example, what about Bill’s ex-wife, Cricket, and Tilly’s mother Nancy, as well as their friend, neighbor, and occasional housemate and business partner Gloria, who went on a quest to take down big tech? In addition, Gloria was quite excited to play with Nancy while trying to get her attention. In retrospect, however, it was certainly one of the more amusing misconceptions that the audience was not able to see these two characters during their expedition in more than one witch hunt episode. All that Gwendolyn Zapp did when she stepped on stage to surprise the audience was shout at the top of her voice that she was going to get back at her kindergarten teacher who told her that cultivating vegetables in space was unrealistic. Quite a motivation at that, but it actually does the trick. It’s also important to understand that this former teacher is out of her mind now, so she doesn’t even care what’s happening around her.

In Zapp’s world, the list of people that she harbors a desire to put through the cycle of vengeance is prolonged and in the farce that Zapp engulfs herself in, these people come off to her as actors who committed a similar crime of acting,” the order relative to the appointments to that particular branch appears rough and final”.

It doesn’t take a moment for Zapp to leave for Mars when he is informed of the Earth getting bombarded with an asteroid.

About the ending of this movie, putting a potential in jeopardy, I am going to say that at the very least reconciliation is there, Bill with Cricket being a good example. After all, they are father and son. Everybody wants their family to be prosperous but the different approach sometimes tends to work. One can gather that in saving the world with that weird idea, it is Bill who gets some of Cricket’s attitude himself. The commander Voyd (who had been unfrozen by now) too started to realize that Zapp was not as good a commander as she thought herself to be and she too started disobeying orders in order to assist the Greens in their plot. Given that it was her first appearance, this is not a lot of character development, but it is quite sufficient and serves the purpose.

The film wasn’t that bad but it did feel like a very long television episode. Some of the character’s air time may disappoint fans of the show, especially Remy, who had barely any screen time but still wore a conga costume. The original voice actors were back for the movie and their performances are great. But the thing is, are we used to them McBrayer, Kelly, and Goldsberry are a part of the cast too. A movie reminiscing which is a weird cameo. Trejo was switched out for the role of a key holding guard to Remy. The movie shows Remy in a single form yet is unclear as to Why it’s Vasquez.

The songs are fine and don’t require much commentary. It’s Disney. There are bound to be a few songs in there somewhere. Nothing surprising for animation. There didn’t appear to be anything new to the ordinary run-of-the-mill series. All in all, such a compilation should be an enjoyable movie and hopefully will please the fans of the show and the new viewers.
