UGLIES 2024

Sizzling The Hunger Games’ around the time of its release quickly became a hit action movie, alongside this filmmakers also went on to create equally interesting movies such as third installments for parent dystopian films. As an example for the fusion of concepts, let me reiterate the strong diffusion of parental works and their formidable counterparts. Other movies such as ‘Divergent’, and, more notably ‘The Giver’, as well as ‘Maze Runner’ caught great attention and allowed viewers to experience novel content for the very first time. This wave of adult novels also swept the American film industry allowing studios to create strong adaptations as more and more fans rushed to the theater. Scott Westerfeld combining his knowledge of dystopia wrote books about a world filled with uniquely different people which he named ‘Uglies’, hes only recently begun producing movie adaptations. Mark Mcg in Charlie’s Angels portrays a world which doesn’t discriminate against looks but praises it as the only feature needed to identify a class.

There is no right side to the debate Roger F. The contestant is spaded by its implications that every inhabitant of this world is very young and beautiful. Until the age of sixteen, people are regarded as non-operatives and Endowed with an invention that seeks to enhance the normal human body. This enhancement into augments further includes or augments slopped for arms, eyes and perfection creation among many elements. The undesirables, now termed as the 15 and below category are not visible among the existence of An enviable city that is layered by dull and unattractive designer-constructed buildings. For Tally (Joey King), the clock is counting down because her best friend Peris (Chase Stokes) is going to celebrate his birthday in a couple of days. As these mechanisms are set into motion, they promise to meet again, and sign a document to keep the communication going until the time is right. She embarks on a quest outside the city in search of him after learning that she cannot contact him. Here the ridicule she has to go through and the fact that she cannot muster up the energy to look her best does not help this scenario considering its the only time it happens.

Tally, however, has to put up with Shay (Brianne Tju) – another rather less than attractive individual who strangely also shares the same birthday with her. They use their hoverboards to commit ugly acts such as reading Thoreau in the middle of Walden without any witnesses. Everything starts to spiral out of control when the birthday approaches and people’s speculations reach a boiling point regarding Shay’s decision to remove her hideous flat face.

Instead, she intends to keep being true to herself and go to ‘The Smoke’ where a number of outcasts get introduced to her by David (Keith Powers). After Shay, who is a bit more optimistic than the rest, fails to get a procedure date, dr. Cable (Laverne Cox), who holds high authority, knows of the bond and postpones Tally’s change for that reason. This only comes after someone locates Shay and assists her in tracing back her city. Until then, Tally is never permitted to be attractive. But as soon as she steps into The Smoke and meets David, Tally’s understanding and commonly taught perception of the world as only having uglies and pretties is put into question. Can it be that easy though?

For instance, talking about the themes and its treatment, “Uglies” feels the closest in its jumbled thinking to the younger target demographic. The society is in a blend of computer-generated imagery and visuals which the streaming service uses to fast forward the audience five centuries in the future.

AI rings, hoverboards, and toothpaste pills, for example, may be present in the source text, but they are shown only intermittently during the film this is a pathetic shortcoming. Another shortcoming is that ‘Uglies’ has not established the emotional foundation required for the adventurous segment, which is sure to be the turning point with respect to its movement.

What is missing are the high-stakes action sequences and what is most difficult to create both on paper and in practice becomes what is most achievable.

Because of the pacing, the film shuffles its set piece to an exposition and back to a set piece at a lot quicker rate than necessary. One never gets a chance to breathe and immerse into the universe that McG is trying to stitch together. Also, it is the same case when it comes to the thesis and core idea of the film’s conclusion. There is again no substance and there is once again the subtle message that there should be no substance. Such a thesis has no depth in any case, and perhaps it is not a problem to be shallow for the target audience, but in any case, the film does not do much to entice any more than the primitive. What makes sense is already indicated within the first 20 minutes, and for the rest of the time, this is somehow constantly heard in throwing directions with the other parts of the story besides the other aids offered.

Because of the script being so clichéd, interpreting acting and performance is quite an easy task. King’s renditions of the forlorn and rugged dystopian enthusiast does tend to come off as unrefined and dangerous but in a good way. Cox as the evil Dr Cable does not make much of an effort in her character, she is simply a cruel and uninteresting woman who walks around beating people up.

She has aimed so low in her acting, either of being charming or, more importantly, terrifying, but during the whole film she is acting as a once kinda evilout which puts a distance between what the film was trying to achieve and what was actually achieved.

In the movie, the character Shay played by Tju, does a very good job of bringing out the role during the action and seems believable which is apart from thinking way beyond the action and even David Powers. But this time, due to the game and mystery, Powers has something to which, I believe, can be torn. Tju and Powers present a pale shade of the feeling which is later attached to some repetitive story which becomes boring.

‘Uglies’ could be described as an antiutopian narrative to which Orwell has greatly contributed but in principle, it’s free of any solid conviction. In the whole ‘Young Adult Dystopia’ series, this is a rather sad book and it’s unlucky narration. The movie is entertaining and fun although it does build a world in a lazy manner.
