In ‘The Radleys’ the book by Matt Haig adapts into a lackadaisical vampire horror-comedy that seemingly lacks the basic sense of self. The British film features Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald as the alcohol-abusing Peter and Helen Radley who raise their kids in a distant suburb while keeping them in control until the kids’ vampiric sides begin to develop.
The couple, who are indeed very protective of their children, shift towards the ‘active’ vampire identical twin brother of Peter, Will, played by Damian Lewis, when their teenage daughter Clara, portrayed by Bo Bragason, weirdly reverses sexual assault to encounter herself for the first time. The characters often mention and seem to have recently created the concept of ‘family disease’, which they describe as vampirism, they also mention how their lustful behavior has now transitioned into a fully developed addiction. In parallel, the characters increasingly construct an ambiguous narrative, wherein Rowan (Harry Baxendale), their gay son, becomes modestly interested in their handsome neighbor Evan (Jay Lycurgo), who additionally constructs sexual women metaphors, only for the props and hints to be unveiled once the vampires come out similar to queer people.
The type of music that is Keefus Ciancia’s score during the start is interesting and without a doubt electrifying. But the movie instantly displays the name called “The Radleys” which instantly lowers the expectations the viewer would expect to have. This reduces the chances of selling out to the degree that it has become the practice of current Hollywood and is often practiced by the European cinema industry. Rowan’s voice-over explains how her neighbors are criticizing her for being too white but from my perspective, she did not seem any different than the white actresses in the film.
There just seem to be so many of them that one whole episode might not be enough. Jared, Evan’s father (Shaun Parkes) believes the Radleys are vampires for some reason, which is a bit odd owing to the fact that the family has taken measures to conceal their identity. The very occasional mention of vampire ethos in the motion picture is even more aggregator as it contains some stuff already the features such as mind control and being invited to cross a threshold or having disdain for garlic but most of the other stuff does not even see their reflections and bursting into flames from the sun are just ignored but the vision does not state its boundaries in any significant way, seemingly expecting the spectators to understand how the screen vampires operate in the beginning. These named above ideas are introduced in a specific order, but they are revealed only at the respective moment in time where there is insufficient airing time to explore developing plot threads, leading to weak jokes and insufficient plot exploration.
Every actor puts in so much effort but unfortunately, the script is not up to the mark. Lewis does successfully differentiate between his two roles, that of a strict and subtle psychologist and of a laid-back and sociable twin brother. Out of the whole group, it seems that only Macdonald might have enjoyed the delusion aspect, and so he adopts a more frenzied and anti-authoritarian approach to his role. Nevertheless, there are a lot of missed opportunities when her character could have transformed more fully, which explains why her character is underdeveloped.
‘The Radleys’, a somewhat comical movie manages to stay within the confines of a homestead as it follows two uniquely stylized shots consisting of Lewis’ take on Peters’s bloody antics. As uninteresting as the ‘Radleys’ have turned out to be, it does raise a few questions as to whether this is the overall purpose of the movie due to the lack of color and depth to the entirety of the movie. It’s almost ironic that an entire genre that’s comprised of fiction, thrillers, and chaos includes so many sub-plots while still being disengaged from the notion of mischief, to begin with. The dynamic shift in the movie’s settings and characters along with its adult prideful vampires offers a new definition to the entire genre that practically speaking, feels overly vague and shallow. Any tiny percent of the movie that can be deemed worthy is snatched away before it has a chance to develop on its own.
