In simpler terms, the branch of ethics that deals with the moral status of human-animal relationships will be treated as a historical excursion. Forced in Argentina’s 1976 military coup, one may find it surprising to read a book on a special relationship between man and animal. But this is exactly what occurred with Tom Michell an English teacher in an elite institution in Buenos Aires, during one of the volatile historical phases of the country. Everything appeared to be spiraling out of control in the country and several of his colleagues were insane, he was wondering what to do with the Magellan penguin he had carelessly brought back with him at the same time from a weekend in Uruguay. In case he wanted it or not, the book he published in 2016 The Penguin Lessons, the title implies sufficient variety from the literature for children to the domain of animal stories for adults for such kind of works. The film directed by Peter Cattaneo is rather funny and lightens up the narrative, unlike the comic book which deals with more serious issues. The exotic annoyance who almost repeatedly takes up the television is expected, enhances each of the episodes, as well as the few frets that he has.
Coogan’s character Michell is less than impressed by the rude graffiti on the exterior of his new office during the seventies and, shows up dressed in a corduroy blazer, slacks, and suede desert boots. However, he still walks through the lavish doors. The sound of guns and bombs can be heard from a distance. Michell appears to be more worried about the stain he got on his shoe than anything else. Stuffed shirt headmaster Buckle, played by Jonathan Pryce remarks We try to stay above all this, but tempers down when the new teacher walks in and goes on to say that, politics are irrelevant. This sarcasm is parochial liberalism, but yes, “The Penguin Lessons is not going to be very progressive either.
Michell is a primary school teacher with an utterly incorrect view of class management. In his case, he is trying to establish contact with undisciplined children, pretending to be an uninformed rugby coach and fighting for affection from someone who has no idea what sarcasm is his Finnish aide. Maybe some political context is provided by the widow caretaker of the school, along with her granddaughter Sonia, who seems relatively more interested in the events than these Europeans, during the time of the Argentine Dirty War. Still, Michell believes it was a coup against his government, which lets him enjoy a seemingly relaxing holiday in Uruguay. There, in an attempt to impress a woman he spent the night with, he rescues a penguin from an oil slicked beach.
In this case, an amusing set of circumstances unfolds where Michell seeks to hide his unusual pet from border patrol and later Julian’s school, where Juan Salvador is far too adorable to be hidden for long. On the other hand, Juan Salvador does not want it and remains with his sad rescuer, which ultimately earned him free airfare to Argentina in a canvas bag. He does everything to save the bird so that he can later take it to the wilderness. Uncontheartable cuteness may just be as good an insult as Michells increasingly passionate failure to lesson against war poems so broad them all. Soon after that, donning a more at ease expression Juan posits himself as a ‘Deputy’ for Michell in class, which leads to a ‘Dead Poets Society’ effect, with students mesmerized in overwhelming amounts, where even the set restrictions of poetry being centered around ‘those times’ could not contain them. Nevertheless, this is the performance of the penguin which I must say to Michell’s credit has been overshadowed by what one can only call a super penguin.
Coogan’s performance is quite commendable as he manages to be quite hilarious while selling the character’s reasoning. While performing the B-plot of the story Coogan is seen trying hard to convince the audience with a deeper sense of loss. However, in my opinion, the character of Sofia being simply forcefully abducted by the military junta is both, touchy but, simultaneously engaging from a readability standpoint. The ending truly lived up to my expectations, with Michell’s engagement in politics and everything. Michell’s participation highlights some of the darker facets of her personality which is in stark contrast with how the school portrays her. If you are one to enjoy the adventures of Juan Salvador then The Penguin Lessons will most definitely entertain you as even though it may not capture the same excitement as a true athlete would, it is centered around a penguin.
