The Gutter (2024)

I’m a Black male actor in The Gutter Yassir alongside Isaiah Lester and people may find it hard to think that a minority can convincingly pull off a dumb parody but I dare argue otherwise.

The studio has mentioned that Shiraz Moore would portray Walt, a bartender with an eccentric fashion sense who is characterized as a little lazy (Walt rarely wears shirts). Mozell (Jackee Harry, famously known as “227”) has also been employed in that bowling alley and is recovering from stress. Equally employed at the ago is Skunk who was once a highly regarded bowler but later became an alcoholic. D’Arcy Carden, who is famous for her work on The Good Place, plays Walt’s character who stumbles into Skunk at the bowling alley and learns about his extraordinary talent of adding roll into the strike.

The thrill and excitement of competing in pro-bowling tournaments returns to Walt and Skunk, and together they go to attend a national bowling competition tour after an Irish inspector named Adam Brody informs them that if they fail to come up with a 200,000 development plan for the alley, the place will be demolished in two months. In need of a background for his new county rap song, he works together with Spicy Hot Miik and Pornhub. It is for this reason that Walt acts as a shield for Skunk against Linda Curson, a retired chain-smoking bowling diva who has come out of retirement to set things straight. Skunk doesn’t stand a chance against her.

The film Gutter is devoid of any imagination or creativity, it is talentless. With a hint of humor, the film does pay homage to Kenneth Smith Haslam alongside the Cohen Brothers. The kind of humourous and masculine losers found in Happy Gilmore and Hot Rod, among others, are also found in the other two films based on Bowling that also possess a niche market set out by the American Cinema industry. I apologize if this sounds like heresy, but I find Gutter to be an inherently hilarious piece that never fails to entertain me as such I sat there amused throughout the show, having a good laugh.

If Adam Mckay and Everlast are masters of their domains, then the claim to fame that these movies are built upon is destined to be brilliance, for the memes that these movies are echoing from 2007 to 2010, were unmatched by anything previous. The visions showcased in the movie paint a picture that is out of this world where the characters resulted in being some oversized satirical figures creating a revolution with their unrelenting improvisation of words.

The Skype interview titled ‘Aperture of AI’ has urban comedy which is primarily due to the black cast. The humor is once again more blatant than its predecessors. Several moments in the show are absurd but are funny in their own right, for example, Brother Candy (hotep for those who think I’m being funny) who fervently screeches into a microphone while declaring ‘white people’s ancestors are monkeys’ and then adds the icing on the cake ‘That’s why their nipples are pink!’ or a male voice’s dispassionate driving of a convertible with all the widows down which then in the next second you see slamming into some bin cans. To Walt, what is the game of accusing him that he has a rather conservative view that it is not proper to shoot basketballs in space because they don’t want little Willie to WIN? Kendrick Lamar is saying not much in his short n-word dreadlock rap songs.

Walt is introduced as the overly arrogant protagonist played by Moore, who was the voice of Miles Morales in the Spider-Man animated sequels. Anyway, he regards the hero as a man who is devoid of self control, who has only a single minded focus on sex and hate and dominion over everybody who has the gall to fantasize about a threeway.

On Carden, a cropped T-shirt is standard attire for her, takes on the role of the coach in a supportive role which includes fewer pre recorded lines about her gulping beer and being more savage than tamed.

Interestingly enough, we have a few desultory guest appearances, examples being Kim Fields as Walt’s toilet-dwelling mother, Jay Ellis who happens to be the more attractive of the Insecure Hitchcocks, and Paul Scheer, one of the co-hosts of How Did This Get Made, who plays a Southern-style margarine soaked bowler. We also have Paul Reiser on set, who plays the bowling commentator that the audience equally does not like especially Walt and Skunk fans. (It’s a little like Fred Willard as the commentator but slightly more racist and simply quite pathetic and miserable). Yassir Lester fellow black cop shows up once in a while as well during the stand up sad part. One of them is Tony Baker who I think is an influencer, and he quite unexpectedly inquires about why Walt will not pay for his dark burgundy color cummerbund.

For this, some might go as far as to call The Gutter boring. But I would strongly support the idea that when Black people are shown this, they too will probably refer it to as ‘lame’ but in quite the sincerest of tones.
