The Beach Boys (2024)

A film whose title is ‘The Beach Boys‘ depicts the band The Beach Boys as amateurs. This trivialization of the band could be ameliorated if the observation behind it contains an interpretation of the band as creators of classics. Beach Boys, the writers who gifted mankind the songs “God Only Knows” and “California Girls”, along with pop artists like the Beatles often tend to be brushed off as a band that made music for fun and without any meaning similar to what other pop groups during that time might have created. For a long while, it was hard to convince people of this due respect which they finally earned, of being a band who not only tried to but redefined music with their almost impossible harmonization skills and portrayal of Californian sounds in a new light. The new documentary “The Beach Boys Making It Big” has the same message that Don Was underlines corroborating the point here that these men were, unbelievably, “the most articulate spokespeople for the California dream”.

In this case, the film “The Beach Boys” seems to be doing very good work in the personalization aspects because all they have to do is retell the anecdotes that are already detailed in the music of the band but it does easy tasks. The aim of the documentary should be to connect and blend many different ideas to provide a viewer with rich content instead of spending time listening to the music collection of only one group.

At the very least, it’s fair to say that this film features the most dynamic band ever. The made-in-Marsh Korea movie epitomizes a pet’s outlook in Smash’s Pet Sounds and Smile, which was neutral with the expectation of about three additional songs. With its focus on the years following that movie’s release, this film is painfully average.

They were on the edge of an indefinite collapse. Capitol Records released a greatest hits album titled Endless Summer which helped me in getting to know this frigging great band, and it made them popular once again. Where it is expected that people explain the history of the group and why it continues to be treasured, ironically, a number must talk about the trashy Pop of the 2010s. Other than Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic, there really are a lot of such alternative pop-rock bands that could have taken that slot. I really do love the Beach Boys, and I think they remain underappreciated. This film did better than many other pointless things in supporting the other side of the argument – for what reason?

Like all biographical films which tend to follow a formula, The Beach Boys’ in truth has a visual and a plot line that is Raising Sons instead. In the initial years when the group started, they for example amalgamated The Four Freshmen’s harmony with the era of Dick Dale’s guitar pop rock to create an eclectic sound which this film portrays.

They also talk about some of the tensions that would shape the group, as Wilson, the band’s genius, had always been at odds with their cousin and band leader Mike Love. For Brian, this relation was quite different for he was a quiet political but imaginative man who wished to be seated and writing, while Michael, on the other hand, was a showman who wanted to be in front of crowds. There were really two styles to the Beach Boys for a while. One was in the studio and the other, going out on tour. Another of the film’s remarkable insights is the claim that The Beach Boys made a name for themselves because at that time when other groups, including The Beatles, could not reproduce their sound on stage their fans would still like them.

As expected, any person who knows The Beach Boys even slightly is familiar with the rather dark history of the Wilson family. The Beach Boys Murry Wilson is known to have been domineering and violent towards his children whom he resented when they decided to sell the catalogue. That said, it appears to be quite cautious to remain in those murky waters. While this film during its development always took into account these issues, this is a weakness of the film in that it is forever ducking the core problems of the Beach Boys including the artistic and later legal differences that came about between Brian and Mike. And then from this fortress of family drama, it returns to the more easily digestible dimensions. Joneski is left with the unfortunate feeling that this film was meant to be a TV series, but there was not enough money to shoot it in the best quality.

There’s an interesting issue regarding who the audience for ‘The Beach Boys’ is. Sure, an old-school fan hoping for more interviews and old songs might be happy, but, talking about such films is kind of disrespectful in my opinion, as well for the actors I admire. It is my honest opinion that at a minimum there has to be some care for the devotion to the art and the complexity of the personality being displayed. It could be that I am such a big fan of the band that ‘The Beach Boys’ does not suit me.
