Karyna Kudzina and Michael Vaynberg use immigration tragedy as an example, especially in the context of Jonathan Swift’s essay A Modest Proposal. Eating the poor to fix the population problem seems like the lesson that Karyna Kudzina and Saro Varjabedian teach together in Silence of the Prey. It also talks about immigration and the conflicting social views Mounting Conflict is all about slamming the door at your face.
Nina (Karyna Kudzina) is an illegal alien and a mother from Belarus living in the US. With her daughter Bella, her options are either to hope for employment somewhere in America or to roam the streets of the city where no one would get her any job. Because of this, Nina reluctantly agrees to babysit slightly mad old man Luther (Chris Lapanta) in his isolated house located in the middle of nowhere. Everything she eats is self-produced in an apiary, plants are used to make cough syrups and there is no cover at all. Also, there is no phone, internet, or mobile network, the nearest store is a few kilometers away and there is only one road that leads in and out of the area.
The screenplay, however, quite abruptly, switches to the scene in the forest, depicting the confrontation. To recall, it is rather not a confrontation since Shakur and his homies do not seem to be intent on contesting their male rivals at all. To this end, it also several men cannot but suggest that there is likely to be a twist near the end, for after the woman and daughter step out for a pee, a host of male characters emerge from the woods to the right in a bid to usurp the faction. There is also the additional embarrassment of never wanting to smile; from the time Luther walks in you know he is overstepping with an agenda. While Nina is being trained she has specific instructions that include never setting foot in the building where meat is cured by Luthor. This is the border upon which Andres (Monte Bezell) seemed to have located the place where his car was lost, where transgressors will be transgressed.
Though humans tend to have a fond emotional connection with deer, in the eyes of some people such animals are viewed as sacred, and thus killing them is said to be beneficial as the population can get out of hand. This is what Luthor mentioned and he made sense out of it not only this but he also went on calling Bella ‘Bambi’, as he was taking her to different parts of the property. Nina in the secluded house starts to experience hallucinations where people with the heads of deer can be seen standing beside the boundaries of the farmhouse and watching her through the window.
The most disturbing aspect of Silence of the Prey, in fact, is not the violence and the usual schemes, but rather the deep-seated hatred, phobia, and ignorance that so many people seek to cover. This horrible reality does come to light in the course of a celebration. For example, some forget that they consider naked people to be migrants and refugees: what is surprising about that? This kind of ignorant creativity usually fuels isolationism – the extreme depiction of other people as pure evil whose only agenda is to destroy families. “Is Belarus a region?” and “It was once part of Russia so what difference does it make?” This kind of sheer madness is apparently common in Canada, as in most countries of the world. American-bred racism is revealed in the fact that in that celebration Andres is attacked with the question ‘Where can one buy coke, ‘You come from the right class’ so to say. Talking about the concept of an “Ugly American”, who views the country as the greatest in every aspect, is a concept that has been used to describe people he is dangerous. In truth it would be easy for some to dismiss the message as a bit overdone as it can be understood that people’s lives and security are in danger, that is true.
Cinematographer Varjabedian shot the lush forests giving both a rich look and texture to ‘Silence of the Prey’. If Kudzina seems like a fair-haired clone of that actress, she also gives an intense performance. There were some beautiful insights into the passive Nina, especially in the moments when she does not accept what she is offered. Sure, there are probably speed limitations in the shooting script but countless people do not see the speed limitations or the overall, if there are such, elements that are described as ironic or lol have in fact, the terrifying animal of the woods and the creature which roams the streets.
