A deranged woman in a small town takes her potential victims and turns them into murderers with words. However, one of her last targets takes her into the world of conspiracy, prostitution, and some otherworldly sights.
Saint Clare is a film that has a high school drama that helps set the stage, but then it decides to stir things up by dealing with multiple murders, so it may be difficult to fully grasp it.
The film features Bella Thorne as a Catholic School girl named Clare Bleecker who is supposed to be recreating Clare, but I think she has moved on from the role. This is a perfect angle we get to as sixteen Clare is gushing over Bella Thorne. Clare, a teenage girl, has been pouring her energy in becoming a serial killer who “cleans” society by killing men who seem a little gross to her. Clare believes she is haunted by a little girl who begs her to help in the form of whispers. For Clare to get the help she needs is served perfectly by one of her early murder victims, Frank Whalley, Whalley’s role is to shape Clare’s character to am precisely what she needs. Yes, those are slightly shocking heinous shots as tortured am suitable amuses us , Such franker sex comedy depictions of sadism are very appropriate for savage feminists.
One thing that sticks out about Mitzi Peirone is her odd use of angles that tend to go overboard. Being a skilled filmmaker and stacking some awards during her feature film Braid, overdoing it at times while being a director and photographer has worked out for her since she already is an award winner.
It is clear enough that it’s a great effort to balance other aspects of the film, but such efforts can become overused and boring.
She appears to enjoy the rotating and panning of the cameras which is okay although it definitely looks over the top.
In general, the performances are really a game of chance. It’s all rather hard to take too seriously as I’ve said countless times in this review, such focus can be hard to pin down. It can be said that a more tame edit could have mounted some tension, which is something this film really was lacking in. Scriptwriting is where I think the most significant issue emerges. I can see that Guinevere Turner is the original writer and the first draft that was written was then altered by Mitzi, yes it is very common to have multiple writers but still it does suffer a lot from this, and it does seem like they were working on completely different narratives.
Bella Thorne has her own weak traits and this clearly slots her into going ‘over’ on multiple occasions as it is meant to be every now and then. At times, silence is the most effective weapon. I think here she is misplaced. I found Frank Whalley to be a hoot. Despite him not having much screen time, when he is in front of the camera, he does command all of the attention.
It was a good move to bring back Rebecca De Mornay but I reckon that the casting for this movie was not too great. Now, speaking about her, however, she is the woman who plays the custodial grandmother of Clare. Ryan Phillippe had a more interesting character to portray due to his sadistic tendencies for portraying himself as a dirty cop, however, I did find it difficult to get immersed in the plot and the tension was nowhere near the intensity that I expected. Furthermore, I found it quite hard to fathom that Clare, who is ‘reportedly’ 16, was showing off a range of skills Marines are trained for such as high kicks and triangle chokes while being fully intoxicated in a single episode. They often thank her for establishing a distinct relationship with God and even say that there’s a chance that she is some sort of superhero. The Delgado family always wanted to highlight her portrayal of the Mexican senorita in the highly popular movie, Miss Congeniality.
The storyline is built on the book ‘Clare at Sixteen’, written by Don Roff and published in 2021.
This book definitely has scenes I would classify as being an elder millennial version of Dexter so I’m certain it would also perform well as a movie.
There is a conceptually strong narrative here but the execution cringe-inducingly lacks the depth to make it truly shine and do justice to its premise. From what I can tell regarding the source material of the film, this doesn’t feel too out of place at all given that it follows a similar story structure of a solitary character that is promiscuous, although I can assert with confidence that if you liked the Netflix series ‘You’ then there is a good chance you would like this book as well. Even though the movie doesn’t really provide much in terms of concrete proof regarding this, the book has a much more actionable format.
