Nocturnes (2024)

The film Nocturnes starts with a dark screen filled with hundreds of moths some in the back and some in the foreground, with a swarm of insects moving towards the camera. There is very little movement across the screens as it shudders slightly, the only other thing that can be heard are the insect wings.

The last sound that I have just talked about is what we are going to hear during this entire movie, it is something that is always around us. The tendency of moths to freeze and form striking designs against a light grey background, scientists examining these species, or the fauna in their mountain home the light biz surrounds all of these. Sometimes it appears to enhance the concept of the viewer, the moths, and their habitat and goes alongside other soft tunes, only to turn into bzz. Particularly in climate change films, this sound is quite common it conveys the message that a lot of the species are on the brink of extinction the audience included.

Nocturnes casts a biologist, Mansi, and her indigenous researcher Bicki, alongside toads as their primary subjects. It captures two spirals instead of one, being a sensory performance itself, Mansi beams her assistant Bicki in Northeast India and Bhutan’s shallow forests to gather moths and their relatives in their respective habitats. The scientist actively participates in age-old customs associated with the April ceremony of the Pericopis moth by wandering off into the core of a prism and setting fire to hot lamps intertwined amid dark pieces of fabric while examining a multitude of moths. Different groups of insects are showcased on a cloth radiated in heat lamps, while a few other species are detailed further in their use as a voice by the British. He suggests that Mansi, the biologist, interprets both fluttering as a lizard’s technique to warm their muscles in an otherwise more ‘animated’ manner.

Not everything is meant to be digested there are some elements that are meant to be enjoyed and absorbed such as the films “Microcosmos” and Godfrey Reggio’s “Koyaanisqatsi.” However, the filmmakers of this project, Anirban Dutta and Anupama Sreenivasan, have incorporated both “slow cinema” and “Direct Cinema” into their films. Salesman and Gimme Shelter are good examples of this time of Direct Cinema and purposefully relied on the raw audio from the environment rather than overly-produced soundtracks. In some cases, a different, more film-like approach was used, in which the audio was mixed prior to filming.

This movie may seem incoherent or incompleting but there are plenty of other influences and themes that are present which can bring forth questions like what is the style of the movie. The direction of the movie can be different for different viewers. Some of the conversations between scientists were real and presented real-life struggles, while others appeared to be in fixed positions, speaking slowly and with no emotion. That’s right, to say that this installation is didactic fails terribly, there are exaggerated fictional parts. even if you take a close look at the movie, narrowed-down parts become highly scripted parts of the movie with high emphasis, and that in turn becomes the style of the movie.

The lack of urgency regarding the environmental crisis elements in ‘Nocturnes’ appears to be rather unusual as it is a film concerning nature and thereby alienating its audience by strong artistic perspective in order to endow its viewers with appealing nature paraphernalia at the end of the film, rather than making the audience miserable over some of the more depressing issues surrounding the nature of the theme such as the film’s theme. (One of the things that annoyed me about the film is the way it was edited: I cannot tell whether my impression is that it was too drawn out or it was too brief, but however still I happen to occupy a minority position when it comes to the film’s critics, as this film has been rated very highly ).

I believe they are going to be precisely correct on this matter. No one is going to think that the film has not been picture-perfect in its appearance and its audio. In the society that we reside in, if the camera work and sound systems were considered on the same hierarchy basis, as the documentary films are, then they would get nearly all the different awards in this particular field. The best way to watch ‘Nocturnes would be in a cinema with no light or near a TV set where it’s dark, and you have headphones which improve the quality of the sound so you can see the full effect of the film. How we could actually put the physical aspects of the movie and seeing the movie together and be able to change how we see these beings? It kind of did it for me. A long time back, I would not even touch a moth and if I did, it was simply to take them out and release them outside, except when they were near me, in which case I would swat them. So my new policy will be if I am wearing wool, then I will clean them off if the moths buzz about, but if not, then I will not touch them. They cause no trouble to anyone and look very beautiful.
