Batty Garrett is a filmmaker whose face is familiar to me because I have been in the filmmaking circles for a number of years now and have watched most of his films which include Batty’s 2018 movie The Saratov Approach which tells the story of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints missionaries forcibly taken in Russia, 2015 Freetown which depicts a few Latter Day Saints in Ghana and Joseph Smith: Out of Liberty 2019 that focuses on prophet Joseph Smith’s last days. Garrett has a very keen sense of what to focus on, and he manages to present his themes very well.
It is also not a surprise that he brings that master’s touch to his latest production Faith of Angels. The film is an amplification of the enduring enigma associated with the 1989 southwestern disappearance of Joshua Dennis at the Hidden Treasure Mine close to Tooele.
As Josh dons the hat of Michael Bradford for the first time, he goes on a camping adventure with Kirby Heyborne and his father, and a few other fathers and their sons. The purpose of the camping expedition was to locate the Hidden Treasure Mine. While no plans to keep it active were in place, it had plenty of unused passages spanning for miles which could make anyone lose the premise of this story.
As the explorers began to comb through the mine, two factions of individuals began to head in separate directions. Josh’s group decided that it was about time to head back when Josh was still in hopes of catching up with the others. However, he began to lag, and within mere seconds, he was isolated from the rest. His father assumes he’s alright, however, when the second party returns claiming they never saw Josh, it becomes evident that they had a problem.
As we turn to other places, in fitting with the character, in the outskirts of Montana John Skinner, a writer who decided to take a holiday for a short while, is certain that he inadvertently hears someone say, “Help them see,” and immediately in the dusky background, it teases me, and if I am not mistaken it sounds like the voice that is associated with the words, If they build it he will come, in the movie Field of dreams.
The reader will find this hard to believe, but Skinner concludes his vacation and returns to Utah, but this time does not go to the mountains. Apparently, for Skinner, this is a very remarkable feat. He was actually a boy’s scoutmaster and lost one of his boy scouts on that expedition, there have been a lot of empty-headed boys romping about in the hills of that mountaineer region.
But the sheriff is purely interested in his maps and so doesn’t want him or any other unqualified person to interfere. One kid is already lost under his supervision. There is no need to exacerbate an already difficult situation. Let’s say for the next some days, without being irritated or visibly annoyed, Josh and John both take awe in the numerous directions, associations and words of encouragements delivered to them by the angels, spirits, ghosts, and whatnot in order to be able to relay the message across the not so fortunate target before it’s time is up.
FAITH OF ANGELS MPAA rated it PG in regards to the thematic elements. With Kirby Heyborne. John Michael Finley. Michael Bradford. Jason Wade. Written and directed by Garrett Batty (The Saratov Approach Out Of Liberty) Set in Utah. 98 mins long.
