Eternal You (2024)

With the arrival of LLMs and digital afterlife, it is becoming more possible to ‘talk’ to AI avatars of the deceased and the industry of digital afterlife is indeed rapidly growing. With regards to Eternal You, it seems that the filmmakers hold the position that due to their endorsement of the technology in question, tech bros are able to idealistically capitalize on it. However, Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck do away with this troublingly naïve belief and show how new products are designed and how they continue to be designed surrounded by moral, psychological, and emotional chaos with a difference in perspective.

Contrary to how it may seem, the creators of Eternal You understand the genesis of generative A.I technology well enough. The creators discuss how they feel and think, and how the intersection of the two creates a complex network of motivation rather than a single source focused solely on solving the problems of social media. On the other hand, this documentary also includes testimonies of several users of C.E. models, detailing and explaining their incredible volatility and lack of control.

The film also depicts the mother who contracts a business to create an artificial intelligence likeness of her father. The kids are said to have never met their grandfather and a fellow who communicates with a digital image of his late fiancée developed by some other software. One of these applications may seem to be more physically viable than the other, however, what Eternal You does is allow the results and the participants to have their say without presenting any bias.

With regards to the documentary’s protagonist, disclosing the painful and horrific sideline must not be overlooked either the Korean woman’s wife, masterminding the Meeting You documentary encouraged her to meet the recently deceased child’s avatar. In this setting, she explains that sometimes she dreams about her daughter, and the last time they spoke she scolded her but after trying the VR environment, she says that her dreams have improved.

Still, while considering these interactions, whether viewed in or caused by the VR lineage or from the stage enveloped by a plethora of green screens, it is impossible not to reflect upon the long-term psychological compromise that this can provide. One example is when a woman’s AI avatar of her deceased husband declares he will be damned, the harm caused by these programs becomes perfectly clear.

On the other hand, considering the absence of any checks by independent professionals who would at least try to evaluate this product when it is ready for the market, and still Eternal You does not appear to have been so completely criticized. As one of the Middle Eastern Analysts relates, the first and foremost context that should be placed within the digital afterlife life industry is: as opposed to the previous, it’s not about more ways to be with the deceased.” And given the profound lack of predictability in the locomotion of the models which increasingly seems to be the case, as well as investor overconfidence about the biases regarding the centers of a bulk of the research, it is how gross the danger is and cross what the humanity would do with the loss is still an open question.

However, Block and Riesewick’s film clearly appreciates the fact that we are on the cusp of a technological shift that will drastically change the psychological health of all of us. This movie’s stance towards technology is neither an animated critique nor praise but is gentle and careful. There is appreciation and excitement about the new technology in Eternal You, but it is respectful of it.
