I understand some of the fans. There was so much hype around `Descendants: The Rise of Red,` so while waiting for it to go live, I re-watched the originals, and, admittedly, got a bit engrossed in them. Let’s be honest it is absolutely unrealistic for three lead characters to be good throughout the finale of the third movie, and those characters are not very appealing. Over the course of the trilogy, the supervising director Kenny Ortega enhanced the strengths of the support from the flaws of the first movie and also expanded the settings in parts 2 and 3 of the movie. One idea that was implemented quite nicely was giving the voice of the Dude the Dog in both sequels and some roughly cut gags that would fit easily among the myriad of running gags in the film.
Now it is Descendants: The Rise of Red, Ortega has taken a step back and Jennifer Phang joins us in his place and there is such a novel twist in the style and design of the numbers and sets from the very first scene.
The first three movies, on the other hand, were accompanied by a certain sentiment, hinting towards the tribulations the directors were arguably put through. To make matters worse, even the action sequences in Robert Rodriguez’ Spy Kids 3D Game Over were appallingly choreographed. And the Jurassic Park style shaky cam made the sweating that was meant to flow from the great cast’s performance featuring Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson, and Mitchell Hope completely mess.
It is worth noting that the characters have grown as well since the last time they were in Auradon, which gives Phang a much wider span to play out with the budget granted to them by Disney Plus. In the third film, the script has been transformed into a great peace due to King Ben which was played by Mitchell Hope, and Queen Mal who was played by Dove Cameron who finally let both rotten heart princes and princesses into Auradon, and also the Rest of the Lost Isle. Sometime after the events of Descendants 3, an Auradon Prep Fairy Godmother is played by Melanie Paxson whose character was working in the University. Uma, who is played by China Anne McClain, passes control to Mal and Ben where she and her co-star plan to reintegrate people from the lost kingdoms just like in the third part.
There are concerns that Red is questioning her mother’s love and care. Her perspective is influenced by the tyrant character that she is, preventing her from pursuing anything other than what she knows in ‘Wonderland’. Her skepticism finally bears some fruit when the Queen of Hearts exposes herself to Uma and the Fairy Godmother while hatching a villainous scheme to seize Auradon with some rather outdated yet rather amusing plans of exposing and assassinating Cinderella for fun and games.
In this exchange, Red makes use of the White Rabbit’s watch and retrieves the time. As pure luck would have it, Chloe goes along with her alongside them searching for what Auradon Prepto meant during the time of the beast when only a single kingdom was included, Set in a lovely manner by Jeremy Swift who imitated Merlin, Red ,and chloé was able to reach the final destination and reconstruct the internet on that particular day when her mother Ridgey rose Turner played evil and a Cinderella morgan dudley was the actress who transformed. It is an interesting idea filled with lots of songs, and thus the audience won’t be bored.
The gayest era is decorated in red with the Mikey Matrix which the granddaughter of Zara and Addie helped with, appearing probably not at the original tip of the trilogy with glamorous 91minutes but perhaps 130 and perhaps this one has three times as many musical pieces as the first three.
It’s almost difficult to comprehend how well written songs manage to appear as if they were prepared in advance, and if that were the case for most of it’s a preparation killer. Most of Ortega’s Descendants films were still shot by personal effectors although there is a strong sense of film in how Phang constructs numbers, for example, about halfway through the film, students of Merlin audition with Flamenco caped cakes along with Bridget (originally known as Queen of Coronets). In the creation of narration, how are the Phang’s tone and visual style in relation to each other do care to develop the film? The camera work has improved, a more immersive environment replacing the previous descendants more simplistic versions of the films. In one shot, the camera slaps around like another dancer and students break into the proper rhythm while colorful clothes turn pink as if by magic. The fun of the aforementioned cupcake scene is one such discovery, in fact throughout the rest of the movie lie fun and sometimes innovative music, excellent songs by rocks and good mashups catchy.
Yet neither of these apply to this particular story nor does the scene in the battlegrounds of the first acts which are quite short but interesting, and all in all, the only fighting scene in the film is set when Chloe and Red recreate the past.
Back to the Future’ being an amusing movie has perfected the art of time traveling and has managed to set the standards for other aspiring time travel authors. This is in fact not surprising since the iconic film by Zemeckis happens to rely on every worn out stereotype known to man. This implies that there is no such thing as time travel related comedy that stands the test of logic, and the idea of space and time interference is indeed rather dull, for instance when compared to Red’s stopwatch that on the other hand is a rather fun gadget for time manipulation. What does using a device to freeze time does to the present state or should we say ease the back of it? What is the most pressing aspect of the scenario anyway, definitely does not seem to be the earliest one.
The last act of the movie does not do much to expand the interest scope because let us be honest it is a bit too anticlimactic of a sequence, with an over long fight scene that kind of shifts gears too quickly to be a standalone addition to the Descendants franchise. Father Harrington turned out to be much softer than quite a lot of parents may not be offended by the idea of another iteration based on the franchise.
I would not have wished it to be like this but the reality is rather unfortunate due to the fact that every film in the Descendants series had ended the respective plot lines and then hinted at more to the audiences.
And although Cantrall and Baker are great bolt ons, the principal characters demonstrate such an amazing rapport with one another that no quantity of elbow grease invested by them can match it.
That being said, Phang is not going to let the essence of the Descendants franchise die as he offers a very touching homage to Cameron Boyce who died in 2019 and who is the one who brings Carlos’ arc to a close in a dignified way and with respect to character.
Since the Uma of McClain and the Fairy Godmother of Paxson are absent throughout the most part of the film where Red and Chloe attempt in teaming up to rewrite history and this time get rid of the wicked Bridget once and for all, the story is not continuity wise in accordance to the fourth part. On the contrary, the older stars participation here is not so important in this legacyquel as the roles themselves are quite captivating as they are expected to be more developed especially since it is a series. Hence, Descendants: The Rise of Red at the end is practically impossible to fall over as it has started as a Spinoff of the Original Descendants film and increases the cheerful world which is Auradon, with enough musical numbers and songs to make up for the cliche story and shallow characters and the rushed time travel concept.
Of course that’s a little wishful thinking in light of the trailer we’ve seen but if more Descendants movies are being worked on, hopefully our favorite characters will be returning for massive and much deeper comebacks. Well, only time (and no pun) will give us what we want…
