Aftermath (2024)

The film starts with Dr. Jane Dunning, portrayed by Sally Kirkland, who is talking to a bunch of medical professionals. As she is on the verge of saying something more, the camera pivots towards Kate, a character played by Fruzsina Nagy, who is also in the movie known as Land of the Brave, Opera of Cruelty. This particular character is seen exiting her house in a hurry, carrying a few items and the whole scenario makes sense, given the time she was in.

To his dismay, it was still Robbie, the character of Joseph Richmond, active in the film I Hear the Trees Whispering, who dislocated her busiest moment and tried a frightfully wrong chance. Ironically, it’s so outrageous, that she cannot bear it and spills her coffee. The result of this inattention, however, proved to be unpleasant: she had an accident. How serious it was is still unclear, but going by the source it has almost cost her her life. This becomes so apparent when she gets shot in the head while sitting in a car in some unfamiliar area end of the road.

It was easy to surmise that the incident alone would have been enough to write about her for the last time, for she made it semblent now; the only reason why she endured the same obnoxious occurrence yet again. I’m not planning on retiring any time soon, because without Bubba this cycle would have felt like it would’ve just gone on forever. She said a lot of things about him that he’s a man who did not have any ability to defend himself. He, too, claims that he came to himself in a forest, not knowing where he was, and next to a woman whose goal was to kill him.

Gergő Elekes and József Gallai went ahead and directed Moth and Bodom movies. They did manage to combine their 2020 short to a feature length being out of character in what I expected from Gallai. Aftermath has in it some of his other motifs such as forests that are far off and totally useless buildings, but the differences are much deeper.

On the other hand, there is more of a sci-fi suspense than his neoteric story of a supernatural horror. Aftermath has a very strong emotional aspect as well She is battling to recall the life that she lived prior to her accident. The main storyline of the film is about finding answers to all questions which becomes increasingly relevant as the film shifts towards the climax.

The bottom line is that most of the plot’s concealed facts are, surprisingly, rather straightforward. Even the first shots should be sufficient for one to understand that whatever it is that Dr. Dunning was engaged in, it is bound to happen. What weight the troop’s holographic leader explains to them at the beginning, the context is already quite easy to get. A good question should be to raise how it will all happen. And the answers are not exactly the way they seem to be.

For the most part, Aftermath is Nagy’s film, as she appears in almost every scene with people for the most part of the time, the space is devoid of people. She makes her character so believable that the audience is completely compelled to sympathize with her portrayal. Inoka and Edward Apeagyei as Bubba are the only cast to get more than a minute on screen where they also played Kate’s husband and were almost forgotten.

With regard to narrative construction, it would not be an injustice to classify Aftermath as a completed film. It is quite in the need to address the various issues associated with the fifth and sixth long passages which appear to have been overused in several cinematographies and a rather drastic ointment change in the concluding passages. Some of those self-irritating questions exist and do not get resolved. Where was Eric Roberts’s character supposed to come from and where were his men from? It is probable that with some additional precision and more fluid interactions of the sight added to some of the film’s aspects, the final cut would have been better.

Taking into account the background of the filmmakers, Aftermath should be interesting to the admirers of their other projects. The picture may also appeal to those who appreciate building almost from scratch, but other more mainstream audiences might find it hard to get used to the low-cost technique and old clichés.
