Adult Best Friends

In the debut feature from Delaney Buffet, which premiered at Tribeca, Adult Best Friends, there is also a familiar pair, and that is, along with their mother worked together on a character they have known for many years, as it is noticeable Buffalo, Delaney and Katie Corwin duo. They first met when they both indicated that it was okay to hide in the seventh-grade bathroom during a party. Photos from the past, family videos, and camcorders shot during FaceTime serve as convincing evidence that they had already been friends as kids and have known each other since.

As of now Delaney and Katie are still in contact, the younger women have altered from before but that sure does raise a question of why. While there are people or life forms that are invisible, there is a different category of people, for whom it is difficult to alter their marriage from before, and for those where there are and a call from her husband encourages her to attend what she describes as her husband a mason Gooding. She used to rule much more binding. Or a little more customary routine, again only by guidance. At home with a ‘spiky’ roommate Cazzie David someone who used to be in the hook-up culture, has long gotten out of it and now gets into this world barely ever. The mood swings mix and her tangled days make Hannah Horvath’s schedule very even-keeled. She does ‘Hacks’ by Pamela Adlon, along with, ‘Buddies’ – about how you emerge from childhood with its inherent monotony and absurdity of the changing relationships.

The film ‘Adult Best Friends’ is based on one of the weekends when Katie and her friends take Delaney on a fun trip to the beach. The idea is to bring up the engagement topic slowly to her friend who does not like abrupt change. From the off-screen conversations that Katie’s fiancé John (Gooding) and her older brother Henry (Zachary Quinto) are engaged in, it is evident that this friendship is quite stable and one where Katie always has this dependency on what Delaney wants which is not fair to both the ladies in the sense that they seem to have been quite dishonest to themselves or to each other. As they begin their journey to the shores, which is the setting of Adult Best Friends, a hefty silence prevails in the vehicle.

This film relies mostly on the convincing romance that the audience perceives between the two female main characters. Given that Corwin, who plays in the film with Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau, appears to grasp the subtleties of this role, so does Benny. In this regard, such realism ensures that the arguments and the emotional or climactic context of the events in the film are relevant and engaging enough.

Katie seeks to redefine their adulthood to this particular coastal location in Adult Best Friends. With Delaney, however, they focus on a private villa instead of the fraternity-favored hotel that is the Pelican Palace and avoid the traditional style of activities that include keg stands. She instead prides herself in the dictatorship of dates and refuses to adhere to Katie’s command of best behavior for the weekend. She still scours for plastic cups and stays at the bar until closing time.

Thus, these two disparate motives seem to suggest that no one would ever think of a fantasy holiday of such a description. Once Katie and Delaney arrive to the location they have chosen to rent, they are greeted by a cache of expletives from their host, Cory Walls who ensures strict adherence to rules which include zero parties, NO alcohol, and no sound.

A weekend with a rowdy bachelor party called ‘groom’ somehow manages to involve a mellow (Connor Hines), his brother-in-law (Benjamin Norris), a tech millionaire (Michael Rowland), and the best friend (Carmen Christopher) seeking to go on a trip. Katie and Delaney also bump into a college friend that they find obnoxious (Miki Ishikawa) and her irritating husband (Alexander Hodge). Such meetings act as reminders that we are revealing to this duo the opposite sides to the detriments that impede their togetherness and if there are solutions to those.

Adult Best Friends proves to work as a bridge to Katie and Delaney’s coping with growing pains and the challenges that come with it, but this one is laced with a whole lot of humor. Adult Best Friends is also a compilation of funny snippets of the members of Buffett’s cast, which is exactly similar to what Taylor Garron’s As of Yet (2021) was aimed at. The amusing interactions of Delaney not looking forward to attending her team Zoom calls (Casey Wilson, Owen Thiele) take the mickey out of contemporary work culture.

At the same time, during her therapy session with Henry and his wife Heather Mazur, Katie slackens on the culture of ‘therapy speak’ that is in mass use today. The ‘animation’ of British culture also makes it easier to watch the movie. With the talented cast and the charming Katie, the storyline does not drag in a general sense such as the transition from analyzing bunches tightly tied and bogged down by rigid dynamics of friendships to considering the limits of self-determined ones. In the end, the author and our review repeat one and the same thing – we root for Katie and Delaney and want them to get ‘their’ happily ever after.
