Wynonna Earp: Vengeance (2024)

Wynonna Earp: Vengeance (2024) was released on SYFY back in 2016, and while it was a low-budget, sometimes cringe-worthy show, one cannot deny that it was quite enjoyable. It was truly a remarkable blend of the fantasy genre with Western elements such as robberies and gun fights. The production was quite great and talented, coupled with a satisfying fan base, thus the chances of the show getting canceled were low. Fast forward a couple of years, fans expressed their wish for a fourth season and it was during this time that Earp was anticipated to be the last season ever. Thankfully the wish of so many fans was granted.

However, this was until the release of Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, it would be more accurate to say it was more along the releases of kneeling to Alive, as the Earp fans got 90 minutes long special. Even though there was an announcement tailored to Tubi fans, it was evident how dedicated the crew was to making sure everything related to Wynonna was accessible to all creator facilitates fans of Earp. So now let us dive straight into this review of Wynonna.

The series may no longer be delivering new episodes and it may have finished for some time now, but the channel change definitely has its advantages and it is clear that this is the direction Vengeance wants to go in. Why not; Melanie Scrofano once again lands into her character as Wynonna Earp and it quite simply works. The bond that existed between Scrofano and Tim Rozon, who happens to play Doc Holliday, still exists in this season in the same way. Seeing Rozon appear as the fastest gunfighter in the West is very fulfilling, he is just made for the role.

Vengeance’s risk appetite also was to a certain degree very similar too, but in a much lesser sense. For one, the first scene was highly brutal and bloody which tells the viewers that there’s no fun to be had here. So, there are a couple of points I will touch upon, that are definitely going to be spoilers and I must say that it is appropriate to discuss these because it relates to a series that tried to make a comeback after several years of hiatus but ended up disappointing its die-hard fans and the standards of the old shows.

Major Spoilers.

Veronica Mars had a dedicated following before it was popularized, and this clearly explains why fans were thrilled to learn that the series, which enjoyed a successful run on television, was revived for a mini-season by Hulu in 2019. The only irritating stirring point was when the lead actress turned out to be too difficult and Logan was hastily taken out without any necessity, thus implying that the sequence of events gradually killed the very character that the viewers cherished the most.

Fans of Wynonna Earp would have been satisfied had the show stopped at season four. In the Vengeance episode, there were quite a few faults in Wynonna and Doc’s relationship, especially their arguments, but given the amount the couple had been through, and the time they advanced together, this was somewhat reasonable. Rather, that was done and a more mature and loving approach was taken than what the writers showed Veronica and Logan on Veronica Mars.

In that way, one can say that it was sad to kill off Doc Holliday. What? Which comment is that? Well, as a matter of fact… it was stunning. No, Doc did not ton blow up, he died in the arms of the woman he loved. It was very moving and very barbaric, and Melanie and Tim certainly know how to draw tears from audiences in their performance. At this point, let me switch over to the third party and I will focus on Rozon, he has an absolute right to claim in the interview to Buzzfeed with Rozon that yes, it is sci-fi and well anything goes. Maybe it is a bad idea to expect some kind of revelations but under the circumstances time and time again it was bittersweet and very well cooked again for the character.

It’s Good to Be an Earper. Kindly allow me to get back to my earlier point. He wasn’t the only one who shined. Watching Nicole Haught, as played by Katherine Barrell, and Waverly Earp, played by Dominique Provost-Chalkley, was the best part. Destiel is out of the way. WayHaught is what a fandom needs to coalesce around. It looked much more like a warm welcome when Waverly and Nicole hugged Wynonna. Hi everyone, this is for you – were some of the words in it. There are also those who even idolize the showrunners, the writers and the actors themselves, who cherish their viewers and the safe work that they do. You could sense it sort of little all over the special. Eventually, Wynonna Earp: Vengeance gave me the impression that I was watching yet another story unfold within the Wynonna Earp universe. It was awful, beautiful, captivating, and heart-wrenching all at the same time and best of all it reminded every one of us that it was a great show. What was ever the deal with ending it? All in all, Earpers, and for the ones who if out there already and who still want to satiate the Earpy appetite, don’t look any further because Vengeance is out.

It lives up to all the expectations and even better, it does not corrupt the original unlike many remakes tend to do nowadays.
