Reunion (2024)

Having been banned for some time, murder mysteries are making a comeback and it looks like Reunion is primed to hop onto this bandwagon. The involvement of the creatives in this particular movie is, however, unfortunate because almost everything they envisioned has already been achieved in the superb 2022 series, The Afterparty as well as several other shows prior and after. One thing worth noticing on any level is the cast assembled. Every single actor in the ensemble has a part to play regarding the intriguing comedy elements, especially the breakout of Get Out- comedian Lil Rel Howery. The boxes that the various would-be players are now familiar with, but the general idea of the film does seem to have its light-hearted moments. Reunion is unable to keep up with the rhythm set during the pre-murder rest of the non-murdering characters and its climax is far too early, and dismal, long before the cringeworthy end credits.

Chace Crawford, the handsome millionaire, is set to give his Ridgeview classmates the time of their lives as he plans to welcome them at his gigantic mansion. I Can’t Tell You, Aladdin, and Tell Me A Story’s Billy Magnussen and Evan, police dressed in formal clothing, seemed pretty nervous while driving to the mansion alongside his best mate Ray. Evan and his buddy, bravely drove back after years of separation imagining how their classmates would view them. Ray is pretty sure that today is the day he gets laid while Evan is indifferent about their odds and thinks whatever happens he will be alright since it’s all detached and boring anyway. After that, Evan’s female partner Jasmine, who he had lost touch with, came into view, and he got acutely interested and determined to flirt with her. As they appeared together, it looked as though there wasn’t much need for any explanation or even an introduction. In the end, Evan was in for quite a surprise when he was on the receiving end of Jasmine’s love, all along believing it was Evan who was throwing romance her way. Just then the storm began outside and a thunderstorm left them without electricity.

Matthew’s body is found in the building the next day, seemingly after having been murdered. They have nowhere to call an emergency and with so many potential murderers to consider, he and his allies engage in a team battle to determine the identity of the killer.

The interpersonal aspects of the plot are quite intriguing, and it is the character development that makes the first act particularly fun. Also, a significant role is taken by Nina Dobrev, the star of The Vampire Diaries, in the role of Amanda once again, a candidate for Congress this time a reforming party girl; as well as Jillian Bell’s Vivian from 22 Jump Street and Rough Night, a socially awkward woman obsessed with Evan and Ray for what she later says would be a performance for them. Willie Block and Jake Emanuel present an overqualified script and one that leaves much to be desired in its rather bland middle. There also seems to be a certain passivity in the control that Chris Nelson has, whose Netflix shame feature, The Perfect Date, is one of the worst films to have been on the platform. There were several versions of the very same events that had already been recounted to us during the Afterparty. Reunion has time constraints, so everyone makes it a point to sit like Scooby Doo at the house and try to join the dots.

Before we reach the so-called end of the murder mystery Dominos, is there actually any interest in how things end?

Reunion can best be described as unexceptional when stacked against this murder mystery, to put it bluntly, it is tame.

It is a production that does not stand out in any particular way, but at the same time it is somewhat entertaining. However, the rest of the screenplay is so uninteresting that it is pretty safe to say it won’t make it to the record by the end of this year. Instead of marring someone’s filmography,it is much better to say that Reunion comes as joining at the hip. It does try to stand out more than other whodunits but it does quite a few of them.
