In the search for solace, a family goes for an RV trip to the peaceful countryside but is instead antagonized by the local residents. Lowlifes is co-produced by locals Tesh Guttikonda (Just Another Ghost Story, Make Me Feel) and Mitch Oliver (The Druid’s Hand) which adds a step away from the conventional plotlines associated with horror movies.

With disregard to the above concerns, it would mean losing sight of why such audiences look forward to watching this movie in the first place. It is sufficient to mention that the film flaunts the boundaries of the genre, the beginning for instance depicts another family feasting on the barbecue. I appreciated how the banal stereotypes were ‘brought’ forward and instead how I was able to see references to horror flicks I used to watch as a child such as The Hills Have Eyes and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The movie follows the Keith family consisting of Keith (Matthew MacCaull), Kathleen (Elyse Levesque), Amy (Amanda Fix), and Jeffery (Josh Zaharia) as they go to a rural area for a camping trip. Along their journey the family meets with the Cleary family: Savannah (Brenna Llewellyn), Juli Ann (Cassandra Sawtell), Neville (Kevin McNulty), and Big Mac (Dayleigh Nelson). The part that I found most captivating was the actual plot twist of the story. This is clear from the opening sequence of the movie which is full of high energy where the whole camping trip pans into chaos.

The screenplay sheds a light into the diverse and unique aspects of modern family life, how families tend to shape different dynamics based on new additions, and the rural-urban cross-culture. The special effects issued throughout the movie were also very appealing, the way in which things seemed to lose control and enter a realm of madness was strikingly expressed. What stood out to me was the uncontrollable energy in the movie sequences; the directors executed the closeups perfectly and enhanced the scene’s dramatic effects delivering a fast-paced movie where chaos was never out of reach.

Al Kaplan (Zombeavers, Critters: A New Binge) has a way with the pen which is augmented by one of the best leashes to this movie which is his contribution to the script. As an aside, the statement “I eat pussy, not people!” definitely made me laugh! There is Timothy Masters, who in a word, is a wizard in special effects, to be specific. His name should ring a bell for slasher enthusiasts including Predator, Tales From The Crypt, Dune Part Two, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Slither.

I remember wondering what went into making a slasher movie and how to combine creativity with elements of reality. During the Q&A, I felt that the director Mitch Oliver tackled a query that I was still grappling for words to describe when it was being put forth during the Q&A. Among all the many questions about slasher genres, i was interested in one thing, how many horror stereotypes were there. I found Mitch’s answer to be exceedingly polite and well-reasoned.

In his early life, he swears he was adored the brutally compelling hollywood horror movies but at the same time wished to be treated decently as a spectator. He stated that he envisioned a horror film that could help in believing what it was meant to and carefully considered that its audience had watched several horror films in their lifetime.

Well, I tried to decipher what he was saying. Movies like The Hills Have Eyes or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, then yes, I was indeed greatly fascinated and absorbed in the horror genre, thanks to these movies. But suppose I were to go out and about seeking that genre of movie for the first time today, Well, just the sheer fact of me being ecstatic of witnessing such content is radically shocking. Such a context and indeed respect for the old horror films is something that many of the viewers of Lowlifes are aware of and come ready with.

The audiences are fully engaged and Lowlifes is evidence for that. The same devotion to the craft applies to the filmmakers. It is quite pleasant to us that a lot of people have an opportunity to produce, watch movies, create or watch them for fun. Mitch Oliver, the quite average Saskatchewan lad, I could see how there is respect in directing and telling of a story. With this in mind, he sees himself as the narrator of Lowlifes as he only embraces and embraces the notion as being the authentic narrator who is one of a kind story you have always longed to hear – all the ‘Lowlifes’ is a story full of interactive and dazzling narrates history where such opportunity is supposed to be cherished.
