Sam Hobkinson directed the documentary film Lover, Stalker, Killer, and it is based on the rather untoward romance and a murder that was set in motion when a certain auto mechanism named Dave Kroupa put up his profile on a dating website called Plenty Of Fish. This disturbing love story is set in the states of Nebraska and Iowa.
The Gist: Dave Kroupa was in Omaha with a recently acquired search for a woman on report when he had an ex-wife whose name was Flora and he had also fathered two children with her. Kroupa had been divorced for several years and he was on the hunt for a woman for a purely physical relationship. He later had a few months of casual relationship with a woman named Liz Goylar whom he met on a dating site. Then he met Cari who went to the garage which Dave owns to have her car serviced. A few weeks after that, Dave saw Cari on the dating website and they hooked up again. Because Cari was casual and Dave reasoned, it was not necessary for him to keep the relationship with Liz exclusive because he didn’t see it quite well.
A few weeks later, Liz arranged to meet with Cari at Dave’s apartment while she was there to pick up some of her things. At this point, during that brief chat, Dave got a text from Cari saying he should think of moving in with her. When he didn’t readily agree, saying he was willing to keep it casual, indeed, Cari immediately started bombarding him with obscene and threatening messages. Almost immediately that escalated to threats regarding Liz and the purported evidence of stalking him. The Omaha detective leading this case was trying to ambush Dave’s stalker, but for some reason was unable to catch her.
Around the same time, his former girlfriend and mother Cari, who lived to the north of the state border in Pottawattamie County Iowa, went missing, after which she made a missing person’s application. It is worth noting, however, that in the course of the investigation, there was still communication with Doug in the form of threatening texts and emails which led to the police’s belief that she was simply in hiding.
Doug left social agh raked out the syllabus that he was inside Liz’s house. The obsession and threats reached their climax with a fire set in Liz’s house after which both Liz and Doug moved out. One year after they moved out, the Pottawattamie County police were given the case and did investigate the emails and texts in depth, before leading the case to an absolutely baffling conclusion.
Watching Ed Kroupa’s performance was an unforgettable viewing experience, Doug Kroupa was not only one of the otv much dot who conducted interviews with them but was also fully animated as intended by the director. When given proper context, he often tends to elaborate on his extremism during the animated segments more than most of the clips in which he is given an interview.
“To put it mildly, I’m not sure if it is clear but I am apparently on the autism spectrum. It’s familiar to me especially when you look at the fact that I drink the same thing every day. I believe it interferes with the investigations or anything else,” is what Tony Kava, a special deputy at Pottawattamie County’s police office, said over the phone while pouring Soylent into his Thermos.
As we said, however, Hobkinson made a rather straightforward presentation of the case which is at the center of Lover, Stalker, Killer. The reenactments related to Kroupa were the only aesthetic give and there was a reason for putting those in. Sometimes, an editor inserts editorial in the form of document footage or photos taken from other media coverage with a director this time most of the events occurred outside of the cover of the media. So, the only way possible in order to show materially what was going on, and build the tension, was to carry out these inquiry reenactments.
Hobkinson, however, a little more stressed on stylistic devices when the narrative description itself is so twisted, however, that she’s really didn’t have too much more work in that regard in the aims to make it interesting. In this first fragmented portion of that film that is prior to the investigation, Kava, Jim Doty, and Ryan Avis are based in Pottawattamie County and are the ones who are to solve the mystery. Around the start of the film, Hobkinson manages to give the impression that Kroupa is the one who has been stalked, followed, and mangled by clients, However, he has shown just enough details in his shots to suggest that this is not the case. It is therefore easy to grasp the final twist: it hits you hard although you had expected it, even slightly.
Once that twist comes out, there is only one thing that really matters, which is how the case unfolds, and what we found quite nice is the ability of the Pottawattamie County detectives in the case what they did to secure the evidence that later leads to the arrest of the suspect.
To us, engaging the audience more during the presentation could have been achieved had an Omaha police detective displayed a bit of self-reflection and analysis, however, it’s not so bad because some of the details he left out such as the Pottawattamie County details quite forgetful in the eyes of the detective. All in all, it is a minute annoyance in what was otherwise a great and fast-paced movie.
