My children were 8 and 5 when the embarrassed director’s movie was released and what I found fascinating about the movie was the fact that it concerned how little but how powerful the emotional palette of both the children and their parents is. In any case, my children are now 17 and 14, and I must say that there has been quite a change in the scenario. And I put it mildly by saying that the period from 2015 to 2024 had everything a pandemic, a political overturn, family changes in America, and of course, my children’s transformation from being cute toddlers to the teenage version of themselves.Â
Inside Out 2 is understandably a movie that gets it right in some aspects, and Pixar is planning to take nine years time to produce. It is equally entertaining for children below five years old, but I think people working as animators and graphics designers will appreciate it the most.
Riley’s initial throwing out her mother, shutting the door to her job, and turning her back to her mom, instills the very first teenage ‘hormonal’ tantrum within her. She instead tells her mother ‘And this is what the next ten years are going to look like,’ during which diverse emotions tend to overpower her.
Crying while watching this film isn’t anything new for me since I’ve done that many times, I love tear-jerkers. All it takes is a clip and I’m easily in tears, however, it is worth mentioning that if there’s a medal for the best Pixar film, this film would surely win the title after some time. But I do regret saying that this film portrays teenagers (as well as parents) impressively, portraying the different struggles they face, and did a much better job than the initial rendition, thanks to its various elements such as style, humor, and at times sadness.Â
Primarily for the fact that this was not a bland hockey camp which viewers say only depicts ten years is as frustrating as watching Riley constantly grapple with her psychological torment of anxiety, embarrassment, jealousy, and sadness and this concept is a bit ridiculous and impractical because it all happens within a single movie that lasts a long 90 minutes.
In reply to the prompt ‘Things that they want their parents to change about themselves’, a student said, ‘I think before talking to their children, parents need to check their own feelings. Many, many years of anguish and rebellion come to mind and ugly moments that are hard to forget. A teenager has a hard time getting used to the transformations going on with him, but also parents have to get used to the transformations happening in the family it’s a ‘must’. The changes and sometimes the new people or situations can be frightening and humbling but it’s a reality that they have to be open to.
Inside Out 2 benefits from this natural growth process as it demonstrates, almost as if it was fitting hand in glove, a weekend in Chicago filled with teenage problems, friendship, romance, pre-high school anxiety all the appropriate fuzziness of growing up that one can imagine. This explains why Anxiety had a prominent but non-villainous role in the plot because it is understandable, after all, during the film almost everyone was anxious for Riley when she was going through her most embarrassing moments. We still can picture Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and the myriad of other emotional features that manipulate and stimulate behavior that one would rather forget in their entirety, the full range of emotions to reset the equilibrium.
It is still quite difficult to locate a movie as well made and layered, as this one which manages to be both hysterical and emotionally resonant. There is no doubt of the greatness of Pixar both audibly and visually, do watch it, it is something worthy. Watch it on the largest screen available.
