I never thought I’d witness a Mauritian hip-hop Starbucks coffee taking the reins on the Universal 1440 through the Entertainment brand as they are quite renowned for releasing decade-stupidly late sequels to beloved stoner films. 17 years after the first film Marvel gave us Etiquette 2 in March 2019 and this year they plan on releasing Half Baked Which should be expected from a daughter company of NBCUniversal called ‘The Direct Video Beat’. These guys also featured on American Pie’s straight-to-DVD spin-offs and filmed It F’s Me, Castrol Nine. Similarly, down also expands Texan Plan before Krein and Alexander vice seg and dumb even’s movies or more obsoleted. Their mad low-grade ad-supported horror movies have been terribly bland, and the general concepts for it were like simulating the War of the Worlds and featuring Killam well, funny. This area also has its own kind of director. Therefore, I am telling you, that trend is what many more studios should adopt.

There was no need for any elaboration as to how insane the cult surrounding the movies Half Baked (1998) and How High (2001) in the late 90s sat. Their audience wasn’t limited to just french fries and soda but expanded to relaxing on a plush sofa and watching their favorite heroes. Were they blockbuster hits? Without a doubt no, but their mark was left behind on VHS tapes and DVDs filled with 420 culture and rib-tickling music videos. A more precise example would be channeling the spirit of your dead best friend through the power of a weed-fueled canister while trying to survive college. Apart from the music, nerd culture as well as being stoned was prevalent throughout. The fact that Dave Chappelle’s stoner security guard Thurgood in Half Baked couldn’t channel all his energy could be considered a strange event. Instead, he voiced it loud and clear. Designing a marketing campaign around the actor’s name worked like magic. And when it came to the movie ’How High’ Method Man and Redman teamed up and set their sights on Harvard. The two made the admission of getting high surprisingly entertaining. Not to forget Jesse Dylan’s directorial debut.

Half Baked: Totally High is a direct sequel in which Thurgood’s son, JR (Dexter Darden), has trouble managing life when his mother Mary Jane (glad to see Rachel True here) moves him there after leaving his useless father behind. Also, there is a pretty funny cameo by Harland Williams, who, along with Chappelle, Jim Breuer, and Guillermo Diaz, was a part of the original quartet. In this movie, he plays a gym teacher who has an obsession with smoking. How High 2 is far more standalone from the original and introduces all new characters set in that universe. The strangest turn was taken by Lil Yachty and multi-hyphenate actor, and rapper DC Young Fly, who play the slackers Roger and Calvin moving to Rogers’ mother’s basement only to transform it into an extraordinary space after discovering a weed bible that grows rare seeds and makes the best strains. Mike Epps has returned to play Baby Powder, the unbearable dope dealer in How High 2. Alvin in the company of kids Nic and R KO solves any domestic problems using powders slaps.

Also making a return is Al Shearer playing the quiet “I Got Money” the transformation of his DJ who was once a broke “I Need Money” from the first part. And TJ Thyne all these years down the line and still a defined narc made it.

This segment begins with Harland Williams in a cameo appearance, letting himself loosen up for the sequel focusing on mockumentary style parodying weed culture.

In the second movie, an attempt at winning comedy is presented and a classic story with a parallel translation style is presented blending elements from Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke. The action of the film revolves around JR, Myles a cab driver and a wannabe standup comedian, and Corey, a sex toy that is the result of social media, and two completely brainless unreliable friends. Myles, a stand-up failure as well, plays one of his unreputable friends in the film who attempts to cross from California to NJ in which the lettuce dipped in Sativa, chip dipped in Indica, and lettuce dipped in New Biblica weed will inter with a dead Bruce. In order to fund this trip, JR and his buddies begin selling the new type of weed they discovered.

Roger and Calvin’s marijuana bible and stash are taken by some fucked up people and the harsh reality makes them meander for what looks like an eternity in How High 2. They traverse their old torture chamber the high school, a Russian mafia’s house full of hostesses, and an undercover pharmacy company Paris Hilton’s character is fronting, run by Mary Lynn Rajskub who is posing as Elizabeth Holmes.

Stoner movies praise half-hearted storytelling as the main plot is exchanged for subplots that have no relation to the movie itself like a bad storyteller was given the script. In the movie ‘Half Baked’ there was a character named the Guy on a Couch who has always been performed by Steven Wright and is always in the movie but acts like a ghost and has a casual demeanor. I would like to leave Dean Cain in the previous age as he strips Method Man and Redman and blackmails into suspension in the offensive scene of ‘How High’. John Quincy Adams is our targeted ghost and after running out of ideas, the protagonists plan to use him to pass finals. The idea of sprinkling a dead person’s ashes and expecting it to work is surely an idea that no one seemingly can hone up to. Audiences are served up 50 percent violence and 6 percent creativity at best, that and the great moment they are viewed animating such senseless behavior.

Calvin should better steer clear of Rajskub’s ‘safe’ substitute for weed called ‘Fye’, as it has made numerous test subjects go insane during its highly classified trials. In case he fails to do so, smoke shooting out of his nipples will definitely serve as a reminder. DC Young Fly’s electrifying performance combined with his idiosyncratic body movements always fit the bill of levity which makes these episodes of heightened slapstick comedy run of the mill. Half Baked: The Totally High, starring David Koechner, portrays the big-headed white capitalist as an angry owner of a legalized cannabis retail store striving to exterminate all independent operators willing to self-manage their businesses. At least as finished by Universal 1444, the weed film has become the opposite of the progression of the capitalism that set in after legalization and perceives the free market marijuana operator as on the path of settlers of the new world before civilization was compelled by the West.

Koechner is not the mustache-twirling final bad guy in Half Baked: Totally High because he has not fully ascended into the top tiers of the corporate criminal hierarchy. Shadow, the drug kingpin with bad breath (Justin Miles) whose Axios suffers from halitosis seems to be the one behind the biblica sample but JR finds out he is a cupcake. is the one who actually brings in the concluding spine-chilling excitement. No, that is the last straw they do not know but which J.R. Moore’s character did demonstrate even without amping him, one of the common-handed employees of the bar, and this time somewhat drunken and acted by Frankie Muniz, pulls out the long tortures of the wait with the complex nutraceuticals made from it biblica, transforming the half baked part of the movie into a nightmarish spoof of over-stressed lashing out.

It’s only expected that a low-budget film being made 30 years later should include some shocking elements in it. In the film, How High 2, the comedian DC Young Fly plays the role of a guy who acts like Daffy Duck right after a drinking session does a great job and totally gives us something we did not expect. Moreover, the last scene of the movie Half Baked: Totally High makes less sense and launches itself out of the universe. Whichever project Universal 1440 is working on, I want to be a part of that too.
