Ganymede (2023)

Mythology states that Ganymede was so beautiful that Zeus employed an eagle to abduct him and fly him to Olympus. Ganymede’s occupation was the cupbearer for the gods, and as is expected, one of Zues’ many lovers. Ganymede has now become a new film that Colby Holt and his partner Sam Probst who worked on Pig Hag have together created. The film does reflect, to an extent, their life. I suppose it is being a queer child in a religious and Christian family, rather than being sought after by some supernatural being.

There are no creatures in the film’s beginning, however, it does get pale all the same. A man starts smoking a cigarette after propping himself up on a chunk of wood before the camera pans to depict him on the bridge wearing bricks tied around his body. He then starts walking into the sea in the most uninspired way possible. And, fast forward to the present day, the movie begins with introducing Lee Fletcher who jumps in a Lake after getting warm from a night spent running and sees something unsettling where he lands, played by Jordan Doww.

A county commissioner while his mother Floy Fletcher (Robyn Lively, The Karate Kid Part III, Cobra Kai) is a unconditionally loving parent. They also attend the local church where Pastor Royer (David Koechner, Anchorman The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) is the head. Lee also has a great family backing him and does not have a lot of worries which is why he has a promising future ahead.

Lee’s secret is very well hidden until he meets Kyle (Pablo Castelblanco, Alaska Daily, There is No Such Thing As A Dragon) who is very proud and open about his sexuality which makes Lee uncomfortable given that he is a rather shy and introverted person with a sexual secret he hasn’t quite confessed to himself which then leads to the realization of interludes with abnormal monsters both human and non-human.

Probst and Holt have successfully put together a dramatic piece in Ganymede that is worth several accolades including the Pride Award won at the Chattanooga Film Festival and the Audience Award for the Best Narrative Feature Film won at Reeling International Film Festival.

The film barely functions as a drama because, apart from the problem of homophobia, conversion therapy, the trauma family members endure, and the sectarian hypocrisy that invokes Leviticus every time same-sex relations are mentioned, but never the Seventh Commandment against adultery in this case, there still remains the baptism of fire into electric therapy which no doubt, overstepped the boundaries put up by the film’s intent.

What Ganymede pulls towards it which is one of the devices that we associate with coming-of-age films and indeed with all coming-of-age stories is magic. And even if Kosar J. Anthony, Gant Lawrence, and Troy Holbrook (Shameless, Night’s End Lawrence Gant, Candyman, Perpetrator; Strain 100, Detention of the Dead) were able to achieve some truly memorable effects work, it is not a horror film at all. Rather it is a Southern Gothic which, similar to films such as Cold Moon, are not so much focused on the monsters they create, but rather family relationships and skeletons that are covered in the closet.

Ganymede and his father don’t look like they need his mother at all. Ganymede isn’t the type of character that does well as an adult. Miou Miou’s addition to the case would be enough to irritate some observers. Despite this, I believe that inclusions such as Miou Miu’s do not greatly alter the style On the other hand, it strengthened even more the uniqueness of the plot which is always quite basic and the aspect of the specter reinforces the idea of the story.

Ganymede is mostly a drama and other interventions to this drama of earthly proportions are nicely blended into the film. So, if one is in the mood for a drama that has certain spine-chilling elements, then this would be a good choice to watch.
