T.C. Christensen has undoubtedly incorporated culture into his faith in such a manner that only a select few have done before. Without a doubt, there is a plethora of insight inherent in Christensen’s works, including but not limited to ‘The Fighting Preacher’, ‘Love Kennedy’, ‘Cokeville Miracle’, and ‘Ephraim’s Rescue’ and ’17 Miracles’.
Furthermore, T.C. Christensen sought to produce a pro-faith and postmodern episode during the time of World War 2 through the use of Western cinema and painting. As such, it was impossible to fathom the idea of ”Escape From Germany” without T.C. Christensen as a director, screenwriter, and cinematographer. From the majority of T.C. Christensen’s works, it is clear that the audience that devout Christians (such as himself) will receive a lot more from the works than pragmatists.
It was the month of August 1939, and Heber J. Grant gave a task to Elder Barnes who was stationed in that time in Stuttgart as an American missionary. The task was to forewarn the consulate about an impending threat from Hitler. He was supposed to tell them that Germany was planning to invade Poland. However, the American military strategists stationed in Berlin did not think it was an accurate prediction so they were trying to convince Barnes otherwise. But Barnes remained steadfast and argued that the words of Grant were far more trustworthy.
At this point, communication is directed from the mission’s center to all parts of Germany, seeking the evacuation of all missionaries to either Belgium or Denmark before the Nazis close the borders and the war commences. Wood David McConnell who is also in Stuttgart has a dangerous task for one of the missionaries, Bishop Elder Norman Seibold, as he is supposed to go single-handedly on a quest all over Germany and locate the approximately 20 lost missionaries who are distributed all over few cities and waiting at railway stations for their tickets to travel overseas.
On one hand, American President Wood, along with Elder Barnes, tries to guarantee that their wives and children already have their suitcases prepared for safe and speedy departure on the ship while Seibold embarks on this insurmountably challenging and life-threatening mission. When Wood was almost forced to take extreme, and may I say illegal, steps in order to complete the task this turned out to be an unexpected adventure.
While adapting a historical book “Mine Angels Round About”, Christenson Bohle Montague is performing a perfect job in the search that appears to be Seibold’s excitable quest. Right from the onset there is a thrill in how the Wood family scrambles to leave the country. There are hints of a larger context within these characters’s contexts; a Jewish family they kept bumping into, for instance, who were also trying to escape Germany.
However, some parallels, for example, have come more in handy than others, for example, the way a missionary has on multiple occasions escorted the monitoring of the implementation of Hitler’s practices with respect to the church’s culinary practice and genealogy as research which is true but not to the extent that character thought was hip.
McConnell does a great job in his role as mission president but it is Wuthrich who truly takes the cake when he portrays the rugged Seibold, who is depicted as the hero even though he is on a bemusingly well-tailored missionary suit. Wuthrich is known among the Latter-Day Saint movie fans having played the role of Joseph Smith in the 2021 Biopic of the Church founder Witnesses.
It was filmed in Budapest and also the area of Salt Lake City and demonstrates the ability Christensen has of being able to employ little with the increase of his budget as well. His team decorates the Heber Valley Railroad to scale the look of a European train of the year 1939.
Regrettably, the author’s style seems to be a stumbling block and this is one aspect where Christensen’s penchant for accelerating every turn of the plot with the proverbial soliloquy works perfectly whereby the most banal of events or mere accidents are elevated to the status of divine providence. To compose scripts where numerous miracles occur is one thing entirely. To presume them in order to fabricate a narrative is quite a different circumstance.
