Blink Twice 2024

The Review of ‘Blink Twice’, a film written and directed by Zoe Kravitz, has a particular storyline that the creators of the film wish to reserve from the audiences to avoid it from being a spoiler which has led them to revise their approach regarding the making of the film. The base of the plot goes like this a billionaire (Channing Tatum) offers two dames, Alia Shawkat and Naomi Ackie, to spend vacations on a luxurious private island. The writer and director are quite new to the film industry and this is apparent from the shocking scenes which I do not wish to disclose either, the film itself has a variety of events that would allow itself to be categorized as a slightly different type of surprise. I must emphasize that ‘Blink Twice’ does not have a single original scene nor does it exceed the level of its predecessor suspense, if you are a fan of that genre then you are bound to be disappointed after watching ‘Blink Twice’.

The only thing capable of bringing the people’s attention to life will be the Pretty much every plot has a single beat that is dealt with. All words have become a standard and god forbid every other second where the tension would have previously been tasked with going above the norm has already been dealt with by this author. Terrifying sounds, depopulation without any prior notice, and evil welcome such as neck plunges are elements that have been around in the thriller Industry for a long time. So much so as far as their association is concerned is not the problem rather than Harlow’s sobbing which rot the first and second sections of the movie.

Blink Twice’ had successful spin-offs like ‘Glass Onion’ and ‘Get Out’, among others. The location in the very first film seems to be more along the lines of Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’ sequel, although here it is mostly just to detail the subtle jokes of the story arc are pretty much the same as the way Johnson depicts the modern day technology oligarchs. Now ‘Get Out’ however, appears to have provided the template so to speak for the script of ‘Blink Twice’. The wit, the storyline, as well as the manner in which a particular film tackles some issues it all seems borrowed from Peele Jordan’s debut motion picture. And there is no issue with this as such, because the film, ‘Blink Twice’ addresses gender and class issues in a way that ‘Get Out’ does not. But once I held this likeness I could see that thrill that is supposed to be presented in a thriller; or, in casual language, suspense, is long gone since I was so confident about what would happen next.

The only thing that kept me interested as well as made the movie worth my time is its cast. Naomi Ackie who starred as the main actress shows a muted sadness and softness during a part of the movie that later in the film evolves into emptiness and hopelessness. This stark contrast is exemplified by Channing Tatum who plays Slater King, a tech billionaire. There is also a heartless aloofness to emotion in Tatum’s character that is bound to come out over the course of the movie. This particular void works out perfectly for the growth of the character and more importantly, provides for much of the mystery and chill which in all probability would have worked against the centrally simple structure of the plot. The rest of the cast is equally good Adria Arjona follows up her role in ‘Hit Man’ from last summer in style and Simon Rex, Haley Joel Osment, Kyle MacLachlan, and Christian Slater provide just the brand of eccentricity and stupidity that the satire of the film calls for.

Even though the film is fairly predictable, the plot is engaging enough to make “Blink Twice” interesting to watch. Humor and social critique are integrated with the plot of the movie but it’s not done rather exceptionally. The only aspect of the movie I was thoroughly satisfied with was the directing done by Kravitz. While the visual aesthetics and the acting were done decently, the overall objective of the film was never accomplished.
