Oliver Cook’s life comes into disruption once again after he meets a former caretaker Spring Manor by the name of Jack. Aiming to get riches and assistance, Oliver was promised riches and good health only to lose out on many important family relationships. The plot of The Altered Reality starts once his daughter goes missing and all the goods he had earned go in vain. In this book, he attempts to connect the pieces to her inexplicable disappearance while he is constantly overwhelmed by the ethical issues and the absolute. This idea throughout the book revolves around self-forgiveness, the importance of family, and free will.
Altered Reality does not fully fit in the ghost story category. However, it is the reason that I kept returning to the film. Jack (Lance Henriksen) always thinks that Oliver (Charles Agron) is okay without him while I would watch any film with this Actor in it. To my surprise, Ed Asner was also noted in the playbill. More precisely, he passed away in 2021 which meant that this film had a hard time getting released in this case I’m happy it doesn’t remain under wraps.
This man Oliver has an ongoing relationship issue in this movie. Some months ago he experienced a great loss when his young girl died and instead of mourning, he buried himself in his work and went away from his wife. This kind of lifestyle has further resulted in such insecurities causing a fracture in an already brittle bond. His spouse accuses him of having an affair with another woman!
Considering I watched The Veil recently (expect a review very soon), I was almost positive I knew the trajectory this film was going to take. Here, Oliver endeavors to fix the wrongs he made not long ago.
While it’s pretty clear as to why he does it, he only puts in a little effort. This is largely just about his broken love stories.
Sometimes I pause and think where the fascination of Oliver for Jack is, especially during the time that Oliver spends at his mother’s Spring Manor, a place which is usually busy with immovable staff. My thoughts raced as to why this was so when Jack Ross said that he had known the family of the old man for years. The main character told one of the young ones that he could be a great historical figure, which made me a bit confused if there was a demarcation of some kind between this story and the previous one. This while insightful didn’t prove to be the best example all around.
Conversely, these narratives are indicative of a few strange alternatives which would have been more interesting to follow. I would have given this filmmaker higher marks if he made this work more about the investigation and less about the drama centered around it.
All that I would put forward is that I appreciated those scenes that featured Henrikson. As much as he looks old in this film, he is its mainstay. He carries the job of a custodian for the main character and is easy to support. There is a movie in which there is an understanding that the family of the protagonist need not have suffered as it was. This film, quite unreasonably, believes that only one timeline should exist. It seems to have gone out of style to tell about multiverses, and it is nice that this cartoon did not overdo it in explaining the reason for that. It is sufficient to say that in principle every family can be rescued with the help of a good ghost.
